Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Just two weeks after I arrived at the R&D base, Tom called me in a panic.
"Amber, where have you been? Why haven't you been home? Who are you with?"
I was confused. Even though we were divorced, why did it matter where I was or who I was with? He had no claim on me anymore.
"Mr. Carr, we're divorced now. These are my personal matters."
"I-I know, but Amber, I just wanted to check on you."
"I'm fine. Please don't call me again unless it's something important."
At the R&D base, we usually turn off our phones to avoid data leaks, so I didn't even have the convenience of answering messages easily. Tom seemed desperate.
"Inconvenient? Do you have someone else? Who is he? I know you're angry with me, but you can't just move on this quickly…"
I hung up, not wanting to waste another minute. My work here was demanding enough as it was. Despite my R&D background, six years of delays meant I had to catch up on so much specialized knowledge, re-learning concepts and diving deep into the latest experimental data. I was working non-stop, but it was fulfilling in a way I hadn't felt in a long time.
Surrounded by my ideal work, I briefly forgot the grief of losing our daughter. Time seemed to pass faster, and I was too engrossed in the projects to look back.
Aiden, my senior, saw that I'd fallen behind and patiently explained some of the more complex situations to me. He'd been taking care of me since our university days, always looking out for me without crossing any lines. I knew he had feelings for me, but he kept it professional, and so did I. Over the two years we worked closely together, we maintained a delicate balance of respect and distance.
Finally, two years later, after we successfully completed the project, Aiden offered me a chance to go back to Astriad.
