After Divorce, No Longer Waiting for Him

Chapter 13

Chapter 13

On our daughter's sixth birthday night, I hadn't even had lunch, but I was determined to finish up work as quickly as possible. The cake had already been ordered, but River told me our pet was hurt. The pet was the reason Amber and I met, and I didn't want it to die. Our daughter would have many more birthdays, so one didn't matter, right?

But unexpectedly, that night, our daughter left us forever.

When I heard the news, I realized Amber was serious about wanting a divorce. If only I could turn back time, I would have dropped everything and gone to be with our daughter. But there's no remedy for regret in this world.

I was terrified of losing Amber. I tried everything I could to make things right. It wasn't until Grandpa's birthday that I saw River's true nature. That was when I truly understood the debt I owed to both my wife and daughter over the years. I regretted it deeply. I feared Amber would insist on the divorce. What scared me even more was the idea that she'd ignore me entirely. But when I looked into her eyes, I saw no warmth, nothing.

When she told me she had loved me once, for seven years, I could hardly believe it. Because I had loved her for the same amount of time. Now, though, she didn't love me anymore, she hated me.

Let her hate me, I thought. It's better than feeling nothing at all.

I knew our daughter's death was a wound that could never heal our marriage. I thought about divorcing first, letting some time pass, and then trying again when the grief had faded. But then she said, "Mr. Carr, we're already divorced."

Those words hit me like a ton of bricks, plunging me into an abyss. And especially the way she said "Mr. Carr", it felt like a needle piercing my heart.

After that, it seemed like Amber disappeared. I couldn't reach her. No matter how many connections I used, I couldn't find any trace of her.

Two years later, when I found out she had returned to Astriad, I was overjoyed, like a child. I had an engagement ring ready, and I flew back to the country overnight, planning to propose to her. Our marriage had been rushed because of the pregnancy, there had been no courtship, no proposal ceremony. I wanted to make up for everything I had missed.

But reality hit me like a thunderbolt.

She was with someone else. And had been for two years. The guy I had seen with her at university, Aiden, was the one standing beside her now.

In the end, I lost the woman I loved. Forever.
