Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Thomas let go of me and turned to face Kayne.
"If she doesn't want to, you shouldn't force her," Thomas said, his voice steady.
Without warning, Kayne punched Thomas square in the face.
"Stay out of this!" Kayne snapped.
Thomas staggered back, and the umbrella fell to the ground. He didn't hesitate, he stepped forward, ready to fight. The rain came down harder with each passing second. I yelled at them to stop, but neither of them listened. Soon, both of them had bruises. Kayne couldn't land a good punch and was on the receiving end of a few solid hits from Thomas. But Kayne refused to back down, still trying to drag me away.
"Olivia, come home with me!" he gritted out, his voice full of frustration.
I shook my head, stepping back. "Kayne, please. Stop acting crazy. I've told you, we're done."
He stood there, drenched in the rain, his hair a mess, and bruises at the corners of his mouth and eyes. He looked utterly defeated, something I'd never seen before. But I didn't budge. I wasn't going with him.
I turned to Thomas, feeling guilty for dragging him into this. "I'm sorry, Thomas. I… I didn't mean for any of this to happen."
Thomas waved me off. "It's okay. Anyone would help you if they were in the same situation."
I couldn't help but wonder, would they? Would anyone else step in and fight Kayne like Thomas had? The rain soaked through both of us as we stood there, and I felt awkward sitting in his car, the tension lingering.
"Thank you, Thomas," I said quietly.
He handed me a tissue. "Wipe your clothes," he said, his tone calm. After I took it, he continued, "The lab's moving to another state. It's up to you if you want to come with us or not."
I didn't hesitate. I'd already made my decision.
"I've made up my mind a long time ago. I'll go with you."
Thomas chuckled softly, but said nothing more.
