Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Victor's mom suddenly smiled, the chill in her eyes fading.
"I never imagined my son would be so exceptional… and still have such a rocky road in love," she said with a soft sigh.
It turned out the whole thing had been a test, she already knew everything about me.
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding, a wave of relief washing over me. But beneath that was a mix of emotions I couldn't quite untangle.
As I left the café, I gathered my courage and sent Victor a message:
[Can we meet? There's something I want to tell you.]
He replied almost instantly:
[Of course. I'll be waiting at our usual spot.]
I took a deep breath and headed to the park we used to visit. The moment I saw him in the distance, standing under a tree, his shirt fluttering in the breeze, my heart skipped a beat. I picked up my pace.
"Victor," I said as I stopped in front of him, locking eyes with his warm gaze. "I've made up my mind… I want to be with you."
For a second, he looked stunned. Then, that familiar radiant smile lit up his face. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Ashley," he said softly, "I've been waiting a long time to hear that."
His voice was so gentle, it made my heart tremble. I leaned into his chest, and he wrapped his arms around me.
I closed my eyes and let myself sink into the comfort of his embrace. For the first time in a long time, the future didn't look so uncertain, it looked beautiful.
Standing in front of the mirror, I couldn't stop thinking about the day I kissed Ashley for the first time. It had been my first kiss, and I was completely flustered. Before I could even savor the moment, she pulled away and walked off. I saw James chasing after her, and my chest tightened with guilt and chaos.
Still, I couldn't help myself. I texted her anyway.
I remember the first time I met Ashley. I'd just come back to the States and was still getting used to how everything worked. One day, I went to buy a bottle of water, but I didn't have any cash and couldn't figure out mobile payments. The cashier looked at me like I was from another planet.
Then, Ashley stepped in.
She paid for me without hesitation, her voice light and patient as she taught me how to use my phone to pay. I remember thinking, how could someone so cheerful and warm end up with a guy like James, who was all flash and no substance?
Her smile stuck with me. I didn't want it to, but it did.
That's when I realized I was falling for her.
But she was James's girlfriend.
I tried to suppress my feelings. Pretended everything was normal. But every time I saw her, my heart would race before I could stop it. I started showing up at James's place more often, using video games as an excuse, just to see her. Even from across the room, even just for a few minutes, it was enough.
I didn't know how long I could keep pretending. I was terrified I'd eventually lose control, do something unforgivable.
But in the end… she chose me.
And that's all I'll ever need.
The End.
