Chapter 26
Chapter 26
In the dream, Annabelle Whitmore turned away resolutely, her silhouette fading into the distance.
"Annabelle! Don't go!"
Sebastian Kingsley's voice was hoarse with despair as he called out.
"There's a new dessert shop in the west district—they have that strawberry cake you love. I'll bring it for you every day. I'll give you anything you want, just please don't leave me."
He knelt on the ground, hand trembling as he reached out.
But the graceful figure never looked back.
Even the engagement ring he'd carefully prepared dissolved into nothingness in the air.
She truly didn't want him anymore.
"Annabelle..."
In the hospital bed, Sebastian's eyes remained tightly shut, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. His pale lips bore the marks of his teeth, yet he kept murmuring that name.
Old Mr. Kingsley watched his grandson with clouded eyes full of heartache.
"Sir, we've found her." An assistant handed him a slip of paper.
The call came just as Annabelle had seen off her last customer.
"Miss Whitmore, this is Sebastian Kingsley's grandfather."
Her fingers tightened slightly around the phone.
"If this is about reconciliation, please don't bother."
A sigh came through the line.
"Sebastian is ill. Very ill. For an old man's sake, come see him one last time."
Annabelle lowered her lashes, voice calm. "Mr. Kingsley, I'm doing well now."
"You must understand—if I return, I'll never be able to leave again."
"The Kingsleys can make people disappear too easily. I'm just an ordinary woman. I can't survive that kind of game."
Silence stretched between them.
Finally, the old man's voice grew hoarse. "Then... help him let go completely."
Annabelle shook her head gently, though he couldn't see.
"He'll forget me. Time heals all wounds."
After hanging up, a video message arrived.
The Sebastian in the footage was nearly unrecognizable in his gauntness.
Annabelle's finger hovered over the screen before finally pressing delete.
Her heart had died long ago.
On that rainy night, the moment he chose Lillian Grayson.
Returning now would only bring them both pain.
Better to let the river of time carry their memories away.
