Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Kyle Grant and Kevin Grant barged into my apartment without a word, grabbing me by the arms before I could even react. I thrashed against them, cursing myself for ever giving them spare keys.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
They didn't answer—not until I was shoved into the back seat of their car. My wrists burned from their grip, red marks already forming. Kyle's eyes flicked down, lingering on the bruises. Something flickered across his face—guilt?—but it disappeared as quickly as it came.
"You'll find out soon enough," Kevin muttered as he slammed his door shut.
When we arrived, Kyle yanked me out so forcefully I nearly lost my balance. He gave me a shove toward the venue entrance.
And there she was—Jenny Foster, playing princess in the middle of it all, surrounded by Kyle and Kevin's friends. But it wasn't the crowd or the cake that made my blood run cold.
It was her dress.
The design was unmistakable—my design. The one I'd created for my eighteenth birthday. The one Kevin once said he cherished. He'd sworn he'd make it himself the day I agreed to marry him.
Just two months ago, I caught him working on that exact pattern late at night in the studio. I thought it was for me. Foolishly, I'd let myself believe—just maybe—he was serious this time. That maybe, after five years of waiting, I could finally start picturing forever with him.
But now, Jenny was wearing it like it had always been hers.
My chest ached. How did everything change so fast?
Once upon a time, they promised they'd never love anyone but me. And now, both of them acted like she hung the moon.
Kevin shoved me into the center of the room. "You still owe Jenny an apology for keeping her up all night. Since everyone's here… why not do it now?"
Every head turned. Phones were raised. People whispered behind their drinks.
"Is that Lynn Evans? The heiress? Without the Grant brothers, she's nothing."
"Wow. She used to be the queen bee, and now look at her—she can't even compare to Jenny."
The humiliation burned hotter than any fever. Kyle and Kevin stood beside Jenny like loyal knights, letting me take the fall. Once, they would've torn anyone apart for talking about me like that.
Now, they watched silently as I drowned in shame.
I looked up at them. "Did you really forget everything you once said to me?"
Kyle smirked. Kevin let out a laugh.
"That was kid stuff," Kevin said with a scoff. "You didn't actually believe it, did you?"
His words shattered whatever hope I had left.
I turned toward Jenny, heart pounding, throat dry. Then—for the first time in my life—I lowered my head.
"I'm sorry."
Jenny beamed. "You really are something."
Enough to twist Kyle and Kevin around your finger like puppets.
"What the hell are you saying now?!" Kyle snapped, suddenly furious. He hurled his wine glass at me.
I barely flinched in time, but it still clipped my temple. The sharp edge left a stinging welt that started to swell immediately. He looked like he wanted to step toward me, but Jenny clung to his arm.
"Lynn's always been spoiled," she sniffled, dabbing at imaginary tears. "I'm used to it. It's okay."
"Don't say that!" Kevin panicked. "You're the one who matters!"
"Yeah," Kyle echoed. "We only care about you!"
And just like that, I was invisible.
Thud.
The first cake hit me square in the chest, cream and frosting dripping down my dress. Laughter erupted. Then another hit. And another. A full-on food fight aimed only at me.
Through the chaos, Jenny's smug little smile never wavered.
I raised my arms to shield myself, but the insults were louder than the flying desserts.
"Just say sorry again!"
"Stop acting like the victim!"
"Apologize to Jenny now!" Kyle roared.
Tears blurred my vision. Mom… if you're watching… please take me away from this.
And then—
A pair of arms wrapped tightly around me. Protective. Steady. Cold and calm like a storm about to break.
"So this is how you treat my woman when I'm not around?"
Everything stopped.
The room went still as ice. Kyle and Kevin froze, their hands mid-motion, eyes locked on the man now holding me like I was the most precious thing in the world.
Jenny's tears vanished.
And just like that—the game changed.
