Final Approach to Freedom

Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Lucas Bennett trembled with rage, his finger nearly jabbing into Sophia Whitaker’s face.

"Do you have any idea how rare his blood type is? We’ve all seen how Alexander has treated you all these years! If you hadn’t insisted on partying with those troublemakers, none of this would’ve happened! He rushed to save you without hesitation—took five stab wounds for you! And now you’re refusing to donate a little blood? Evelyn, do you have a heart of stone?"

But Sophia stubbornly refused, eventually fleeing home, leaving Lucas fuming.

At the critical moment, Evelyn Montgomery arrived in a hurry.

"I’m AB type. Take mine."

Lucas froze, then muttered a curse under his breath.

What kind of twisted world was this?

The untouchable first love turned her back in his hour of need.

The neglected wife stepped forward without hesitation.

One crisis, and true colors were revealed.

Damn it, Alexander. All these years, you’ve been blind.

Evelyn strode into the blood donation room.

When the nurse stopped at 400cc, she pressed the needle back in place. "Another 400cc. His injuries are severe—he’ll need more."

The nurse protested, "Miss, 400cc is already the limit!"

Lucas stepped in to dissuade her.

Evelyn shook her head. "A life is at stake. If I’m here, I’ll see this through."

800cc of blood flowed out.

When the news came that Alexander had stabilized, she stood—only to sway, vision darkening.

Lucas caught her. "Sis... sister-in-law."

The title tasted foreign on his tongue.

A shame she wouldn’t hold it much longer.

"I’m fine," she managed a weak smile. "Stay with him. I’ll go."

At home, she swallowed a few pills and collapsed into sleep.

With her new assignment in three days, she needed every ounce of strength.

Before leaving, she packed everything.

Alexander’s recovery, Sophia’s fate—none of it concerned her now.

On departure day, she left the signed divorce papers on the table.

Her new pilot uniform gleamed, the four stripes on her shoulders shining bright.

As she wheeled her suitcase out, she nearly collided with Alexander, freshly discharged.

"Flight today?" He frowned at her unfamiliar uniform.

"Yes." Her reply was cool.

Alexander reached for his keys. "I’ll drive you."

Then his phone rang.

Sophia.

After hanging up, he hesitated. "I..."

"Go." Her voice was calm, as if she’d expected this.

For once, he surprised her. "Dinner tonight?"

Watching him walk away, Evelyn touched her epaulets.

Come back?

Alexander, this time I’m flying toward a horizon you’ll never reach.

The stars remain, but my sky will no longer hold you.
