Chapter 13
Chapter 13
I pushed him away. "What are you talking about? He's my supervising doctor."
Lucas wouldn't let me leave. "I knew something was off the first time I saw him. What kind of supervisor gets involved in a student's marriage?"
"Lucas, stop making things up."
He was acting just like I used to when I would question him about where he'd been or if he was with Jessica again. Looking back, I see now how hysterical and unreasonable I sounded.
He pulled me into his arms, trapping me against him, and kissed me forcefully.
I could taste blood on my lips. In the struggle, I grabbed a glass vase from the shelf and smashed it over his head.
Blood started trickling down his forehead, and he staggered back, leaning against the wall in pain.
Taking the opportunity, I rushed out.
After that, Lucas didn't reach out for several days. Finally, I could breathe.
The hospital kept me busy. After Dr. Harrison mentored me and felt confident in my skills, he let me assist in surgeries.
But after several days of back-to-back surgeries, I started to feel overwhelmed. My body still hadn't fully recovered from the miscarriage surgery, and standing for hours on end made my back ache.
One day, after standing for ten hours straight, I nearly fainted on my way to the office. Dr. Harrison was right by my side and caught me just in time.
As I steadied myself, Lucas suddenly appeared and yanked me out of Dr. Harrison's arms.
He jumped to conclusions. "You said there was nothing going on! Why are you hugging him in public? Is that why you want a divorce, because you've been with someone else all along?"
His words drew unwanted attention.
I didn't speak, just hung my head, feeling dizzy.
Dr. Harrison, unfazed by Lucas, walked past him to check on me. "Are you okay? Do you need help?"
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
Dr. Harrison calmly said, "If you need anything, let me know. This is a hospital, and we can call security or the police if needed."
Lucas clenched his teeth, but Dr. Harrison had already walked away.
It wasn't until then that Lucas seemed to realize something was wrong with me. "Olivia, what's going on?" He crouched down, his eyes searching mine.
I was exhausted, my body still hurting from the long surgery.
He saw the scar on his forehead, probably from when I'd hit him with the vase days earlier.
"Olivia, are you sick? What's wrong? Tell me."
"Let's go back home," he continued. "Forget the training. We'll go home."
I interrupted him. "Lucas, do we even have a home?"
He paused, forcing a smile. "Of course we do. Olivia, you love me, and I love you. We're still married."
I shook my head. "No, Lucas."
I looked him in the eye. "I don't love you anymore."
His face went pale, and his eyes filled with tears.
"How... how is that possible? Olivia, how could you not love me anymore?" His voice trembled.
I didn't say anything, just stared at him.
He took a step back, his shoulders slumping. After a long pause, he buried his face in his hands, and I heard what sounded like a sob.
After that, Lucas finally agreed to the divorce.
I focused on my advanced training, but then unexpectedly, he followed me to my new job.
His pursuit of freedom wasn't something I could control.
After completing my training, I had a chance at a promotion, which was a huge step in my career. But I decided to leave it all behind and go back home to be with my mom. I found a new hospital that offered both a satisfying position and salary, thanks to my strong resume.
Occasionally, I ran into work-related issues and reached out to Dr. Harrison for advice. He was always patient, asking about my new role and my work environment.
After we'd talk, there'd be an awkward silence.
On New Year's Eve, Dr. Harrison called me, his voice slurred. "Happy New Year," he said.
He'd clearly had too much to drink.
I wished him a Happy New Year in return, and then there was silence again.
Finally, after a long pause, he called my name softly, "Olivia..."
My heart raced, but I didn't know how to respond.
I stayed silent, and after a long, long moment, he hung up.
After I returned to my hometown, Lucas visited me a few times.
I always kept him outside, never letting him enter my home.
He looked different now, more haggard than before. I heard that after Jessica remarried her ex-husband, she found out that Lucas had been in constant contact with her, and she'd caused trouble for him multiple times.
Now, Lucas couldn't find a stable job and was constantly being threatened, living in fear.
But that was his life now. It had nothing to do with me anymore.
