Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Liam's words caught me off guard for a moment. He was younger than me, yet somehow, he had a way of thinking that felt more mature and insightful than most people I knew. If he could understand this so clearly, why couldn't Lucian? I gave him a genuine, warm smile. "Keep it up. One day, I'll be raising a toast at your wedding."
"Definitely!" Liam's dark eyes gleamed with excitement, full of hope for what the future held.
At that moment, his girlfriend returned from the restroom, wearing a warm smile. "Thank you, Manager Wendy, for treating us to dinner. May all your dreams come true."
I smiled back at her. "Same to you both."
After saying our goodbyes, I walked alone down the street, music flowing through my earphones. My mood was soaring. But then, my phone rang. It was Amanda.
"Wendy, guess what I just saw?" Her voice practically bubbled with excitement. Before I could respond, she rushed ahead. "I saw Lucian and Liana. Lucian was pissed, confronting her."
I wasn't even phased by the news, but I asked, "And?"
"Then Lucian said he doesn't like Liana and told her to have some self-respect. It's hilarious, if he doesn't like her, why would he get a hotel room with her? If that's what he does when he doesn't like someone, I can't imagine what he'd do if he actually liked her!" Amanda's tone was pure mockery, and I almost couldn't help but laugh.
A small, amused smile tugged at my lips, but as I looked up, I froze. Lucian. Our eyes locked. I quickly tried to ignore him, pretending I hadn't seen him, and kept walking. But just as I was about to pass, he grabbed my arm.
"Wendy, we need to talk," he said, his voice low and serious.
I frowned, trying to pull away, but his grip tightened. Disappointment flashed in his eyes. "Liana and I dated. Briefly. At first, I was with you because of my parents, but I fell in love with you, and I wanted to marry you."
He took a deep breath before continuing. "That day... it was an accident. Liana was being harassed by some thugs. She was crying, talking about suicide, and I had no choice but to take her to a hotel. Nothing happened between us. She begged me not to tell anyone to protect her reputation."
I was stunned by his words, but a small part of me wanted to laugh. "So what? What's the point of telling me this now? Did you figure out she was lying and now regret it?"
Lucian's face fell, his lips parted, but no words came out. I'd known it. He'd stayed silent all this time because of Liana's drama, even when I called off the wedding. All for her so-called reputation.
"This is pointless now," I said, my voice calm but firm. "From the moment you chose to hide things from me, we were always meant to part ways. People move on. I'm not going to sit around, waiting for you. There are plenty of guys in this world who are way better than you. Why should I limit myself to you?"
I shook off his hand and walked away. People don't stay foolish forever, and I definitely wouldn't. When I say I'm done, I'm done.
A few days later, my mom found someone she thought was perfect for me and insisted I meet him during my vacation. Not wanting to disappoint her, I agreed. To my surprise, my blind date turned out to be my former senior from university. He looked just as shocked to see me. Years ago, he had confessed his feelings for me, but back then, I only had eyes for Lucian, so I turned him down.
I never expected to run into him like this, after all the twists and turns life had thrown at us. After the date, I didn't think it would work out, and I wasn't sure how to break the news to my mom. But then he asked, "Wendy, do you think we could give this a shot?"
I was taken aback, but I didn't turn him down. At least having him as a buffer would keep my mom from setting me up on more blind dates.
What I didn't expect was how seriously he took it. He treated me well, respected my boundaries, and was loyal. Gradually, I started seeing him in a new light, and over time, I found myself falling for him.
Meanwhile, Amanda kept me updated on Lucian. He didn't end up with Liana and decided to study abroad instead. Two years later, on the day of my wedding to my former senior, Lucian sent an extravagant gift along with an apology letter.
My fiancé raised an eyebrow when he saw the gift, clearly annoyed, but he didn't say anything. I didn't even glance at it, just tucked it away in storage.
My fiancé smiled and raised an eyebrow. "You're really not going to look at what he sent?"
"No need," I said, my tone steady. "It's all in the past."
