I Cancel Our Wedding, Then He Comes Begging

Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Lost in my thoughts, I picked up the roses from the ground and headed downstairs. Without a second thought, I tossed them straight into the trash.

The cleaning lady, who was nearby, looked at the flowers in surprise. "Miss, these are still fresh! Are you sure you want to throw them away?"

I gave her a soft, almost detached smile. "I don't want them anymore."

The flowers? I didn't want them. Lucian? I didn't want him either.

Despite my best efforts to push him out of my mind, Lucian began mimicking all my old routines. He'd show up with breakfast in the morning and bring me afternoon tea later in the day. My coworkers couldn't help but tease me.

"Wendy, you're so lucky. Even after marriage, your husband is still this romantic!" they said, looking at me with envy. "If I had a husband like that, I'd be smiling to myself every night."

I just shook my head at their comments, not bothering to correct them. Colleagues were just colleagues. They didn't need to know the messy details of my private life. They knew I was getting married, but not who the groom was. No need to stir up unnecessary drama.

I enjoyed a few days of peace, rediscovering the version of myself that I had lost. But then, Mrs. Louis invited me to her birthday celebration. She'd always been kind to me, and I couldn't say no. So, I bought a gift and went to the dinner.

Since I had the day off, I arrived early. Following the waiter's directions, I made my way toward the private room. But before I could open the door, I heard sobbing.

"Lucian, if I change myself for you, if I try to win over your parents, can we go back to how we were before?"

Lucian didn't answer. His back was to me, so I couldn't see his face. Liana, on the other hand, was crying, her eyes swollen and pitiful, clearly trying to tug at anyone's heartstrings.

Then their words hit me like a punch.

A cold chill crept up my spine as I processed the meaning of Liana's words. Had they been together before?

"Landy, what happened in the past is over. We should look forward," Lucian said, his voice cold.

Landy? My heart sank. When Lucian called me Wendy, who was he really thinking of?

Liana, still sobbing, said, "You only got with Wendy because your parents liked her, right? I can change. I'll be like her if it means they'll accept me. Lucian, you promised you'd only marry me in this lifetime."

Every word was a knife to my chest. I could barely breathe, my hands clenching into fists.

"Wendy, you're here!" Mrs. Louis's cheerful voice came from behind me, breaking the tension.

I froze.

Lucian whipped around, panic flashing in his eyes. "Wendy, when did you get here?"

Liana, now with red-rimmed eyes, stared at me, her lips trembling as though she was about to burst into tears again.

I shot them both a cold look. "I was just here to witness your little trip down memory lane," I said, my voice flat.

Lucian didn't know what to say. Mrs. Louis shot him a glare, as if he were her worst enemy.

Before she could say anything, I jumped in.

"Mrs. Louis, happy birthday," I said, forcing a smile. "But given everything, it's not really the right time for me to be here. I'll take you out for a meal another time to make up for it."

Without another word, I turned and walked away.
