Chapter 6
Chapter 6
"Mr. Lowe, Chair Lowe, boss! Good evening!"
I turned around to see Lachlan walking toward us, calm and composed as always. He slid an arm around my waist and looked Gideon up and down with a faint, unreadable smile.
"So this is the ex?" he asked casually.
Afraid he might misread the situation, I jumped in to explain.
"We dated when we were kids, barely a month. I haven't spoken to him in ten years."
Gideon flinched at my blunt tone. I didn't stop there.
"And for the record, I never promised to love you forever."
He heard what I didn't say, that any promise I might've made belonged to another life, a different version of me that no longer existed.
"But we have so much history," he protested, voice tight. "How can you just forget everything and move on like it meant nothing?"
I sighed, glancing at Fiona, whose face had gone stiff.
"Why not? You and Fiona are getting married next month, right? So why am I the one being questioned?" I asked, my tone flat. "Seems a little hypocritical, doesn't it?"
Gideon's face flushed. He opened his mouth but couldn't seem to find a comeback. Fiona, however, jumped in.
"Gideon, let's go. She's married now, it's none of your business. I'm the one who's always been by your side!"
She reached for his arm, but he shook her off. Fiona's face turned red with rage, her eyes shooting daggers at me.
Once upon a time, Gideon would've comforted her. But now? He didn't even glance her way.
Lachlan chuckled beside me, his eyes never leaving Gideon.
"So you're the guy she used to date?" he said, amused. "Guess her taste back then was… pretty average. What, you planning a comeback or something?"
Gideon's face drained of color. "No, I, That's not, "
I lifted a hand to cut him off.
"Gideon, whatever we had, it's over. I have a husband and a child now. And you have someone too. Let's not rewrite history just because we're feeling nostalgic."
He froze, visibly shaken.
"Adeline… have you really forgotten us? We were together for so long. You used to love me so much."
Lachlan scoffed, voice sharp with sarcasm.
"A month? Wow. That's longer than our marriage? Should I be worried?"
I knew Gideon wasn't talking about this life. He was referring to our past, the one only I remembered, the one where I stayed by his side for ten long years.
But trying to explain reincarnation to Lachlan? That wasn't happening.
So I shook my head, keeping it simple.
"I didn't forget, Gideon. I just don't care anymore."
"In this life, we made different choices. That makes the past irrelevant."
Then I threw his own words back at him.
"Let it go. We're done. We've been done for a long time."
His lips parted, but he couldn't speak. His eyes shimmered with tears, and for a moment, he just stood there, silent and broken.
I didn't want to drag this out any longer, but then Lachlan, still holding me close, said coolly,
"I heard someone accused my wife of stealing and threatened to call the police?"
The nearby waiter turned pale and started trembling. He bowed so low I thought he might hit the floor.
"I-I was wrong, sir! I didn't recognize your wife, I sincerely apologize to both of you!"
The arrogance from earlier had vanished, replaced by panic.
Lachlan didn't say a word, just gave him a look that made the man sweat even harder.
