Chapter 13: The Thirty-Day Cooling-Off Period

Chapter 13: The Thirty-Day Cooling-Off Period

The wind outside the Civil Affairs Bureau was chilly.

I was packing my luggage when Mr. Sullivan, leaning on his cane, came to see me in person.

The old man's wrinkled hand gently pressed down on my suitcase. "Sophia, won't you reconsider?"

I paused and looked up at him.

"That boy regrets it now," the old man sighed. "He knelt in my study all night."

I continued folding clothes into the suitcase. "Grandfather, not every mistake deserves forgiveness."

Mr. Sullivan grew anxious. "But he truly cares for you now!"

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows as I watched sparrows flit past outside.

"When sincerity comes too late, it's no longer a gift—it's a burden."

My phone buzzed incessantly in my pocket.

My father's voice exploded through the receiver.

"Do you have any idea how many women would kill to marry into the Sullivan family? Your sister endured seven years, and now she has both a son and a daughter—"

"So?" I cut him off. "You want me to end up like her, relying on pills just to sleep at night?"

The line went silent for a long moment before a roar erupted. "Get out! Don't ever call me 'Father' again!"

Thirty days later, the Civil Affairs Bureau was unusually quiet.

Percy stood there in the same black trench coat he'd worn when we first met, holding a manila envelope.

"It's all done." He handed me the documents, then pulled a check from his inner pocket. "This is for you."

I glanced at the staggering sum and let out a soft laugh. "How generous of you, Mr. Sullivan."

His Adam's apple bobbed. "In the future—"

"In the future, I'll send you an invitation to my birthday party," I said, tucking the check into my bag. "Don't worry—I won't let you come empty-handed."

Percy suddenly grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight.

His eyes were red-rimmed. "Sophia, I—"

I gently pulled my hand free. "Percy, don't make me lose respect for you."

As I stepped outside, the sunlight was warm.

I took a deep breath, hearing his voice behind me. "Happy birthday, Sophia."

So today was May 20th.

I turned and smiled at him. "Thank you. This is the best birthday gift I've ever received."
