Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The hospital room was quiet until the door burst open. Ethan Caldwell rushed in, his face a mask of panic.
"Sophia, are you okay?" He dropped to his knees beside the bed, his hands trembling. "God, I'm such an idiot! I should've been here when you gave birth. Hit me, yell at me—I deserve it. There was an emergency at the office, and my phone died. I swear, it just shut off!"
I watched him, my expression cold. His theatrics didn’t move me. Before he could finish, I cut in.
"Let’s get a divorce, Ethan."
His breath hitched. "Divorce? What—Sophia, no, listen to me! There was a crisis at work, I—"
I didn’t have the patience for lies. "Lila Walker. Twenty-nine. Lives in Willow Creek Villas. Three months pregnant." My voice was steady. "Last night, you were with her at Pinecrest Medical Center for her check-up." I locked eyes with him. "You cheated. You’re disgusting."
His face drained of color. "Sophia, I—it was a mistake! I never meant for this to happen. I was going to end it, but then she told me she was pregnant. What was I supposed to do? It’s a child!" His grip on my hand tightened. "Please, I love you—only you!"
Just then, my mother returned, carrying Aurora after her blood test. Ethan’s eyes lit up like she was his salvation.
"Sophia, we have a daughter now. Please, for her sake—forgive me."
My mother didn’t even glance at him. She placed Aurora gently beside me, then turned, grabbed a stool, and swung it at Ethan’s head.
He barely dodged, the stool slamming into his shoulder with a loud crack. She raised it again, and Ethan yelped, scrambling for the door. The stool crashed against it as he fled.
Over the next few days, Ethan lingered outside my room, peeking through the window like a ghost. After my mother nearly hit him with a thermos, I sent her out with Aurora for fresh air and reluctantly let him in.
He looked wrecked—hollow cheeks, bloodshot eyes. "Sophia, please. For Aurora. I swear I’ll never hurt you again. When we’re old, this will just be a small mistake in our long life together."
I sat up, my gaze icy. "Ethan, I have proof—bank records, messages. If you don’t agree to the divorce, we’ll settle this in court."
His confidence shattered. He grabbed my hand. "I’m a monster, I know! But Aurora needs her father. Don’t take me away from her. Please, give me one more chance!"
I pulled away. "No more chances. You repulse me."
Before he could speak, I lifted a hand. "And aren’t you up for regional manager? How do you think the company will react if this gets messy?"
The man who once prided himself on his image crumpled. He fell to his knees, sobbing. The sound of him slapping himself filled the room, but I felt nothing.
"I’ve already signed the papers. They’re in the study. Sign them. My mother will be back soon—you remember how she is. Leave before she throws something heavier."
In the days that followed, I focused on healing. After discharge, I moved into a postpartum care center. The strict security kept Ethan out, and for the first time in months, I breathed easy.
Until the package arrived.
