Chapter 5
Chapter 5
An invisible weight squeezed my chest, and sweat trickled down my forehead like raindrops. The relentless ticking of the clock was like a countdown, each second drilling into my brain, amplifying the tension.
I grabbed the note, my hands shaking.
"The time's not up yet. We're pulling money from different banks," I forced out, my voice betraying my fear.
The kidnapper's mocking laugh came through loud and clear. "The Bay family is supposed to be rich, and you can't even scrape together two million? Pathetic."
I couldn't find the words to respond, my throat too tight with panic. Then, in the background, I heard it, a familiar train whistle, barely audible but unmistakable.
The officers caught it too, and I saw the subtle signals to stall him.
"Let me hear their voices again. I need to know they're safe," I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady.
The kidnapper's anger flared. "You really think you're royalty, huh? Thirty minutes left. If I don't get that money, you won't see your parents again."
The line clicked, and the time was suddenly cut in half, thirty minutes to get the money or they were gone.
The chaos in the room was palpable. Officers scrambled to contact banks, trying to push through the transfers. I bit my lip, closing my eyes to focus, recalling the exact moment before the call ended. That brief, unsettling wind, like a ghostly wail.
I shot up from my seat and grabbed the nearest officer. "Replay the recording! The last few seconds. Fast!"
They were caught off guard, but complied. The replay echoed through the room, and everyone froze as they too heard it, the wind, eerie and mournful, a faint cry from the other side of the line.
I stood taller, my pulse racing, and my voice came out in a rush.
"I know where they are."
