Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I returned to the home I had shared with my brother, the place that had once felt like a sanctuary. I lay on the bed, clutching Ella's urn, unable to bring myself to eat or drink. The hours blurred together, day faded into night, but I barely noticed the passing time.
In my dazed stupor, the door suddenly burst open, and Jack stormed in. He grabbed me by the collar, yanking me upright, his face twisted with fury as he spat, "Where is that little beast, Ella?"
Mandy followed closely behind, feigning concern. "Jack, calm down. Don't scare the child," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness.
But her act only seemed to fuel Jack's rage further. His eyes narrowed like poisoned daggers as he snapped, "Get that little monster out here right now. If you keep hiding her, I'll thrash you too."
I was shaking with a mix of disbelief and anger. "My daughter is a little beast? Then what does that make you, a big beast?" I shot back, my voice trembling with fury. "You dare threaten to thrash me? You're not even worthy of, "
SLAP! His hand cracked across my cheek with such force that I was sent sprawling back onto the bed. The pain burned, but it was the shock that hit me hardest.
I stared up at him, unable to process what had just happened. Jack stood there for a moment, staring at his own hand in disbelief. For a split second, guilt flickered in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by more anger.
"Lucy, you're just jealous of Mandy," he sneered. "You put Ella up to killing Buddy, and now you're hiding her to cover up the truth. Do you really think you can get away with this?"
I could hardly believe my ears. Ella, terrified of dogs since she was three, had never even come close to hurting one. And now Jack, of all people, was accusing her of murdering Mandy's dog?
The absurdity of it made my blood run cold. The pathetic excuse for a father I had once trusted was buying into Mandy's lies without a second thought. He was completely unfit to be a father, and even more so, a husband.
A dark, hysterical laugh bubbled up from my chest, half-crazed. I pointed at Ella's urn on the bed, the final mockery of everything Jack had failed to see. "Hahaha… Jack, your daughter is right here. If you want to punish her for that lying bitch's sake, go right ahead."
Ella was gone. I wanted to see how Mandy would try to slander her now. I thought maybe, just maybe, pointing out that our daughter was dead would make Jack feel some remorse. Some regret. I hoped he'd at least try to clear Ella's name, but reality was far crueler than I could have imagined.
Jack refused to believe me. His hand shot up again, slapping me so hard that I tasted blood. His eyes, now burning with fury, showed no hint of remorse.
"You've really lost your mind!" he yelled. "Spouting such vicious lies, no wonder that little monster turned out the way she did, learning from your example!"
I barely registered his words. The pain in my cheek was nothing compared to the rage I felt in my heart.
"And to think you'd make up such an outrageous lie just to cover for her," he spat. "You're completely unfit to be a mother!"
His words were daggers, but I didn't care what he thought of me. I couldn't bear him insulting my daughter.
With a roar of rage, I lunged at him, slapping his face over and over like a wild animal defending its cub. I spat venom in his face with every word. "Unfit to be a mother? How dare you! You brainless piece of trash, you're even dumber than a pig!"
"Only an idiot like you would fall for that conniving bitch's tricks. Sending a 5-year-old out in a downpour to buy medicine for her dog, if that's not sending my daughter to her death, what is it?"
"Only a moron like you would call that 'teaching independence.' Bullshit! Why don't you teach that precious Mandy some independence instead?"
"And now you have the gall to accuse my daughter of killing her dog? Only a chicken-brained fool like you would believe such nonsense."
"If Ella really wanted to hurt someone, why bother with the dog? She should've gotten rid of you and that bitch! Now that would be cause for celebration!"
I could feel my words tearing at him, but it wasn't enough. "Jack, why couldn't it have been you who died instead?"
