Stormy, Hubby Forces Daughter to Buy Meds for Mistress’s Dog!

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

When Jack showed up at the old woman's new place, she was packing up, her son in a wheelchair beside her. She froze when she saw him at the door, her face shifting through a dozen emotions as she tried to dodge his questions. She either refused to answer or claimed she didn't know anything. But when Jack dropped the bomb that Ella had been dead for a while now, her composure cracked. Panic swept across her face, but she still stubbornly said, "I don't know if she's dead or not, but I definitely saw her that day."

Jack's eyes flicked to the man in the wheelchair. Keeping his tone cool and calculated, he said, "My family runs a hospital. If you tell me the truth, I'll have our doctors treat your son until he's fully recovered."

He knew the old woman would do anything for her son. She hesitated, and after what felt like an eternity, she finally relented. "I killed the dog. I never saw your daughter. Miss Guo told me to frame her. I don't know why, but I needed the money for my son's treatment... I had no choice but to agree."

Jack felt his heart drop into his stomach. All of his suspicions were confirmed. His body stiffened with shock.

Before he could even process what he had just heard, sirens blared outside. The police arrived, Captain Quinn at the helm.

"Jack," Captain Quinn called, his voice sharp. "Lucy's reported Mandy for Ella's murder. Both you and the old woman are now persons of interest. You need to come with us."

Jack's mind went blank. He instinctively defended Mandy. "Captain, you've got it all wrong. Mandy can be impulsive, but she would never murder anyone."

Captain Quinn's face darkened. His old friend, Jack, was defending the woman who had just destroyed his daughter. It stung more than Jack could've imagined. "We've arrested the driver who hit Ella. He confessed that Mandy was the one who planned it. We'll talk more at the station."

The words hit Jack like a truck. His mind spun, and the ground beneath him seemed to shift. He could no longer ignore the truth. All the lies he'd told himself, the false hope he'd clung to, they were shattered in an instant.

At the station, Mandy was already waiting for him, cuffed and desperate. She threw herself into his arms with a pitiful cry, her voice thick with desperation. "Jack, they're framing me! You have to get the top lawyer from the company to defend me. You've got to help me!"

Jack stood there, his arms stiff at his sides. The love he'd once felt for her? Gone. All that remained was disgust, cold and sharp. She wasn't asking for forgiveness or showing any remorse. She was only concerned about saving herself.

Without a word, he shoved her away, his voice ice-cold. "Get away from me."

Mandy's face twisted as if he'd slapped her, and then the mask finally slipped. Her anger boiled over. "Get away from you? After all I've done for you? After all these years with no status, no recognition? How dare you tell me to get away? Are you even human?"

Her voice grew shrill, each word dripping with venom. "Yeah, I paid someone to run Ella over. She deserved it, being Lucy's daughter and all. You and I should've been married if it wasn't for her. If it wasn't for Ella. We could've been together, but they got in the way. They deserved to die."

Mandy's face twisted into a maniacal grin. "I was so pissed. I paid a ton of money, and the idiot driver couldn't even make sure she was dead. And that bitch Lucy? She covered it all up. I had to drag that old woman into it to cover my tracks. But it all blew up."

Her laughter echoed through the room, crazy and unhinged. "Now that Ella's gone and Lucy wants a divorce, there's nothing standing in our way. Aren't you happy, Jack? Hahaha…"

Jack stood frozen, his heart sinking as he watched the woman he thought he loved laughing like a madwoman. The reality of what she had done hit him with full force. He couldn't stand it anymore. He turned and walked out of the station, his head pounding with the weight of the betrayal.

I stood by Captain Quinn, my hand on my stomach, watching Jack disappear down the hallway. I felt nothing but emptiness.

"You're the most incredible mother I've ever met," Captain Quinn said, giving me a thumbs up.

I understood why he said that. When Ella died trying to buy medicine for Mandy's dog in that storm, I suspected Mandy right away and reported it to Captain Quinn. Then, on the way to the station today, we found the truck driver trying to run, and I didn't hesitate. I rushed him and took a knife to the stomach to hold him down.

I shook my head, the pain too much to bear. "No... I'm the worst mother."

The weight of it all hit me in full force. Failing to protect my daughter, losing her in such a brutal way, it was the greatest failure of my life.
