Chapter 3
Chapter 3
"Enough," I said quietly, cutting off the man's endless talking. My fingers tugged absently at the hem of my hospital gown. "Just give me three more days."
The door opened right as I hung up.
Vivian Xavier stepped in, heels clicking. The moment her eyes landed on the faint smile on my face, something shifted in her expression—like it caught her off guard, like it hurt.
"There's something urgent at the office," she said quickly, snatching a stack of files from the table without even glancing at me. "I'll be back tomorrow."
But she wouldn't.
Not tomorrow.
Not the day after either.
The day I was discharged, I opened my feed and saw it: a nine-photo grid of Vivian and Adrian Foster kissing in a hot air balloon, the sunset lighting up their silhouettes like a perfect little postcard.
I typed five words in the comments.
"May you have a child soon."
My phone buzzed immediately.
I didn't pick up.
Half an hour later, I saw them again—outside the obstetrics department.
Vivian clung to Adrian's arm, glowing under the soft hospital lights.
A nurse walked by, smiling.
"Mrs. Foster is so lucky. Your husband never misses a check-up."
I turned to leave.
"Stop."
Vivian's voice sliced through the hallway. She strode over, heels loud and fast. "Are you following us?"
"Coincidence." I stared at the cracks between the tiles. "I'm leaving."
Adrian chuckled.
"Why don't you join us, Mr. Sinclair? I never got the chance to properly thank you for the blood donation."
He pulled Vivian closer, hand casually tracing slow circles on her hip.
Later, in the back of a sleek black sedan, I noticed something jammed between the seats.
A lace thong.
"Oh—" Adrian grabbed it and shoved it into his pocket. "Forgot to toss that last time…"
Vivian gave him a light punch, rolling her eyes.
But she didn't look at him.
She was watching me.
When I didn't react, she snatched my phone out of my hand.
"Password?" she snapped.
"Your birthday."
She tried once.
Wrong.
Tried again.
Still wrong.
Third time.
Nope.
The screen blinked:
Try again in 60 seconds.
Her jaw clenched. I heard her grind her teeth.
