The Day I Died, He Married Her

Chapter 13

Chapter 13

When my body was wheeled into the morgue, Vivian rushed in.

She looked at my lifeless form, collapsed over me, and broke into uncontrollable sobs.

"Rachel, why were you so foolish?"

"Didn't you promise me you'd forget him and live well?"

"Didn't you say you'd fight your depression and become that bright, happy girl again?"

"Liar! You're nothing but a liar!"

Ethan charged forward in agitation, grabbing her wrist. "What did you say? Rachel had depression?"

Vivian yanked her hand free and slapped him hard across the face. "You scum! You never deserved Rachel's love!"

"She was such a wonderful girl, and you destroyed her!"

I jumped in frustration. "Vivian! You promised to keep my secret!"

But Vivian couldn't hear me. Through her tears, she spilled the whole truth.

She said that during my freshman year, I had gotten pregnant unexpectedly. I had planned to have the baby and then continue my studies.

That time I secretly went to see Ethan—I was there to talk to him about it.

But instead, he told me he had fallen in love with Lily.

Even then, I couldn't bring myself to abort the child.

Later, in my dazed state, I went home for the weekend. My pregnancy was too obvious, and my mother found out.

The secret couldn't be kept any longer. Ethan's parents found out too.

My mother was furious, crying as she demanded to know who the father was.

My father stood silently beside her, head bowed, saying nothing.

I bit my lip, refusing to speak.

"It's Ethan, isn't it?"

By then, Ethan had already announced his relationship with Lily to his family.

Our own relationship had been kept hidden from them.

But within the first month of dating Lily, he made it public.

My usually gentle mother wept, her eyes red. "Rachel, how could you be so blind? Ethan is nothing but a heartless monster! Why would you do this to yourself?"

I didn't want to be foolish.

But it was my child.

How cruel would it be to kill it with my own hands?

The baby was already six months along—too far for anything but an induced labor.

Everyone urged me to terminate the pregnancy.

Even Mrs. Winters begged me through tears to let Ethan go.

She said he was the one who wronged me, and no matter what compensation I wanted, she would give it.

But I didn't want compensation.

I just wanted Ethan.

Could she give him back to me?
