Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Seeing the situation, the chief wanted to take me and my son aside for questioning.
But I calmly stepped back and addressed everyone: "Do you really think my son and I caused the fire?"
"What do you mean? The evidence is clear. Are you trying to argue?" Emily's face was full of sarcasm: "I advise you to confess. Maybe a better attitude will reduce your sentence."
"Stop the nonsense. Arrest this wicked woman already!"
"She's just bitter from being dumped by her husband. Who knows what she'll do next!"
Many parents were outraged and might have torn me apart if not for the chief being present.
Parents who helped with the rescue still didn't give up, standing firmly between me and the mob. "Jake's mom, everyone thinks you did it on purpose. Explain yourself!"
"What evidence do you have that the stuff in Jake's backpack is ours? Couldn't someone else have put it there?"
Emily stepped closer: "Stop struggling. If the stuff in Jake's backpack isn't yours, is it mine?"
"It is yours!"
"Don't falsely accuse me! All these toys are bought online. If it's not yours, show us the purchase records."
I smiled and opened the purchase records. The list of toys and low-quality batteries was all under my name, shipped to my house's pickup point, dated just days ago.
Emily, you've been planning this for a long time.
I asked the chief, "What's the story with the hallway ignition point?"
Beside the chief, an officer raised another bag: The hallway fire point was also caused by batteries igniting from high heat!
"Could my son have thrown batteries into the hallway to start a fire?"
Emily was momentarily speechless.
Principal Lee was panicking: "That might not be impossible. Jake is playful; maybe he tossed batteries into the junk and ignited the hallway!"
"How do you know the items were found in junk?" The chief squinted, his years of dealing with fires making him sensitive to cause.
Siren sounds rang out, and Officer Bell finally arrived: "Rose, we brought all the things!"
Officer Bell pulled out his phone, playing surveillance footage from the package pickup point.
In the footage, Emily hurriedly picked up a package and left.
"Based on the package scan time, we found this package was the online order of toys and cheap batteries!"
Emily protested, "That's not true. She bought it, not me. Her phone has the order evidence!"
"Jason Carter, is your phone logged into the online shopping account?"
Jason came to his senses: "Yes, I use the same account as Rose, always logged in."
"Has your phone ever left your sight?"
He looked suspiciously at Emily.
"Emily, did you use my phone while I was showering? How could you do this? Jake is my biological son, and you wanted to take his life!"
The police approached Emily. Seeing Jason no longer defending her, Emily hid behind Principal Lee.
Principal Lee stopped everyone: "Even if Emily bought the toys and picked up the package, it doesn't prove she put the items that caused the fire."
The old lady seemed determined to protect Emily, even grabbing the police: "Don't think you can bully her because her husband died. I won't let you wrong her."
Turns out, Emily's husband had already passed away. No wonder she'd risk everything for Jason.
Jake stepped up: "Those things aren't mine. Ms. Lee touched my backpack and put them there!"
Seeing a child like Jake shout at her, Emily got angry: "You little brat, don't talk nonsense! Who can prove I touched your backpack? I never touched it!"
Now everything was burned, the scene's surveillance destroyed, even fingerprints turned to ash. Emily thought no one could do anything to her.
Although all evidence pointed to Emily, whether she touched the son's backpack was critical.
