Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Two months later, I landed the City A project, finally.
Samantha and I celebrated in a way that kept us up all night, and when I woke up the next morning, she was still asleep, looking peaceful and beautiful.
I couldn't wait to get to the office, ready to turn the company into something even bigger. But as soon as I walked in, there she was—Lily—standing outside my office holding a bouquet like nothing ever happened.
"Bruce, I know I messed up. Please forgive me," she pleaded, her voice soft and full of regret.
I wasn't in the mood to deal with her. I had bigger things to focus on, so I shot back sarcastically, "If you're sick, go see a doctor. Don't waste my time."
But of course, that didn't stop her. As I tried to walk past, she grabbed my tie, accidentally pulling it off and revealing the red marks on my neck. Marks that weren't from a recent argument.
"Bruce..." she murmured, her voice full of desperation.
I snatched the tie back, my voice cold as ice. "You're seriously sick."
But Lily wasn't giving up. "I'm really sorry, Bruce. I know I was wrong. If you'll forgive me, I'll do anything."
I let out a bitter laugh, my gaze heavy as I looked down at her. "Sorry for what? For how you treated me? Do you really think belated affection means anything? It's worth less than dirt."
Her face turned pale, like she'd been slapped.
I turned to head into my office when she suddenly rushed to the window, throwing half her body out. "Alex, if you won't forgive me, I'd rather jump right now!"
I froze for a second, unsure what to do or say, until Samantha appeared behind me, effortlessly pulling me to her side.
"Don't worry," Samantha said, her voice smooth, "If you jump, your mom gets kicked out tomorrow."
Lily froze, staring at Samantha in utter shock. The usually sweet and gentle Samantha had never spoken to anyone like that.
Lily stepped back from the window, throwing me one last desperate look before storming off.
I didn't care. After all, my wedding with Samantha was coming up, and there was so much to take care of.
But it wasn't until a friend mentioned Lily again that I even thought about her. Apparently, Samantha had forced her to go abroad and asked if I knew anything about it.
I shook my head, honestly too busy with work during the day and spending my nights with Samantha to keep track of Lily.
It wasn't long before I found out my dad had found a new love. He'd even had another son and immediately ditched Alex and his mom for this new family, going as far as to get married.
As if on cue, Alex took all the money from Lily's company and fled the country with his mom.
Desperate, Lily struck a deal with Samantha. If Samantha agreed to take her mom abroad, she'd be set for life with money to live comfortably.
Lily didn't hesitate. She left with her mom, and that was the end of it.
But on the day of my wedding, I got the shocking news: Lily had been arrested.
It turned out Alex and Lily had crossed paths once again in some foreign city. When they saw each other, all that old tension and bitterness came to a head. Guns aren't banned in the U.S., and in a fit of rage, Lily shot Alex dead right there on the street. She was arrested immediately.
None of that was my problem, though.
As I relaxed on the couch, holding Samantha's clothes, I grinned. "Samantha, the new clothes I bought you are gorgeous. You should try them on."
Samantha rolled her eyes, blushing a little. "Two pieces of fabric count as clothes?"
"Of course they do," I teased, giving her a wink. "But they'll look even better on you."
