Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I pulled my phone out of the drawer and saw that Kayne had tried to contact me earlier that evening. I set it down and said, "Sorry, I didn't hear it." Then, I went back to reviewing the documents. It wasn't until Kayne came over and stood beside me that he finally noticed my arm was in a cast.
"Olivia, what happened to your arm? Why didn't you tell me?"
I closed the document and replied, "It's broken from the car accident." Kayne's anger faded, replaced by a hint of guilt. He sat down next to me, his tone softening.
"Olivia, I didn't see it at the time. The airbag deployed, and you didn't cry out in pain. I thought you were fine."
I turned to look at him. "Really?"
He went on, "The situation was urgent. Freya was screaming, and I thought she was seriously hurt."
Was Freya really that hurt? She'd just bumped her head on the glass and had a small scrape. Kayne reached for my hand, his voice a little more sincere now.
"Olivia, you know how much girls care about their appearance. Freya would never accept it if she got disfigured."
I nodded. "I know. I understand." He paused for a moment, then shifted topics.
"It was pouring rain last night, and thunder was booming. You know Freya's terrified of the dark, so I, "
I didn't want to hear his excuses. I interrupted, "Okay, she's injured and scared of the dark. You should spend more time with her."
Kayne's expression darkened, and he suddenly snapped. "Olivia, what's that supposed to mean?"
I met his gaze, staying quiet. He let go of my hand, stood up, and looked down at me.
"I've explained everything, and yet you still have this attitude. Are you mocking me? Freya was injured in the accident, and everyone knows she's been afraid of the dark since she was a kid. Do you really want to fight with me about this?"
I stood up, too, feeling frustrated. I didn't want to argue anymore, so I started to walk away.
He grabbed my arm. "What's your attitude? Where are you going?"
"I'm tired. I want to go to bed," I said.
His grip tightened, but he still didn't let go. I yanked my hand away.
"Kayne, I told you I believe there's nothing between you and Freya. I know you're just taking care of her because you're a friend. What's the problem?"
I repeated the words he'd told me countless times. Kayne froze, taken aback. In a burst of anger, he slammed the door behind him.
"Whatever!"
I had said I believed him, but he was still upset. No matter what I did, he wouldn't be happy. And honestly, I didn't care anymore.
