Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of voices coming from the living room. They were so loud, they almost drowned out the birds chirping outside the window.
"I heard Olivia's arm is hurt, so I came to check on her."
"It's not that bad. Kayne, you don't have to help me carry it. I can do it myself."
I pushed the door open and saw Freya playfully acting all sweet with Kayne.
"I was sweating so much walking here, and the band-aid on my forehead is soaked through. Kayne, could you help me change it?"
Kayne patiently went to find a new band-aid, then carefully bent down to help her put it on. They were so close. After she was all patched up, they exchanged smiles, and only then did Freya notice me.
"Olivia, you're awake? I was just about to come get you."
"I heard your arm was hurt. It must be tough for you to cook, right? I brought a bunch of food and I'm gonna make something delicious for you."
Kayne chimed in, "Can you even cook? Don't hurt yourself." He headed straight for the kitchen.
"I'll help you," Freya said eagerly, following him into the kitchen.
"I'm actually really good at cooking..." she added with a smile.
They kept chatting away, not even giving me a chance to speak. I remembered how, in the past, I'd told Kayne that I wanted him to cook for me because I'd heard from his friends that he was really good at it. I even bought all the ingredients. But when they started to rot, Kayne just glanced at them and said, "Don't make me cook. I hate it, and I can't stand the smell."
It felt like he just didn't want to cook for me.
The noise from the kitchen was getting louder, and it was hard to focus on anything. Finally, Freya came over and called me to eat. She'd laid out several dishes on the table. She picked up some fried fish and handed it to me.
"Olivia, I'm really sorry. I didn't know you were hurt too. Please don't be mad at me or Kayne. He was just worried about me."
She shot a sad look at Kayne and continued, "I specially bought this fried fish for you. Please try it."
I didn't eat it.
"Thanks, but I don't like fried fish."
Kayne frowned.
"Freya got up early to go to the market and made this just for you. And you're not even going to thank her?"
He turned to me, "Olivia, what's wrong with you?"
Freya quickly interjected, "Kayne, I'm fine." Her eyes shifted to me, almost pleading.
"I know Olivia's always misunderstood me, and I admit I was at fault for the car accident. Olivia, I'm really sorry..."
She started tearing up, and Kayne looked at her with such sympathy, wiping her tears.
"Stop, it's not your fault. You don't need to apologize," he said gently.
When the car accident happened, Kayne had only cared about Freya. I was the one screaming in pain, desperately trying to get help, but the ambulance was stuck in traffic and couldn't get there in time. If it hadn't been for a stranger who stopped to help, I could've bled out. I was lucky to survive.
"It really isn't your fault. I should've been more careful with my own life," I muttered.
Even if I had died in that car accident, it felt like I deserved it.
"It was my fault for thinking Kayne was someone I could rely on for the rest of my life."
"Go ahead and eat, you guys. I'm leaving." I packed up my things and walked out, needing to find a quiet spot to read through some documents.
