Chapter 4
Chapter 4
"Huh?"
I was stunned for a moment: "I don't drink."
"How can you not drink when you're in society? You have to learn to drink." Luke ignored my protest and handed me a small wine glass, filling it to the brim. While doing so, he put on the act of a caring big brother, "If you don't know how to drink, once you drink this, won't you know how?"
Before me, there was another colleague who was similarly introduced to various leaders, seemingly out of respect, and was required to toast. But that guy was allergic to alcohol, which he had made very clear at the time. Still, he was forced to drink, resulting in him being sent to the hospital. Sure enough, not long after, he resigned.
This happened two years ago, but I never imagined it would be my turn so soon.
I was inwardly distressed, seeing everyone around staring at me, with Luke smiling as he watched.
"Gus, so many executives are watching you. You have to give them face."
I steeled myself, preparing to down it in one go.
The next moment, a hand took the wine glass from me: "If you can't drink, don't force yourself."
It was Ottilie Taylor.
Luke was stunned for a moment, then quickly put on a smile: "Oh, VP Taylor, you're here. I remember you didn't like these occasions before."
Ottilie Taylor looked at him, her expression very serious: "Why are you making him drink if he can't?"
The people around exchanged glances, not wanting to get involved in this mess.
Mr. Hughes was stunned, not quite understanding her intention, but instinctively distanced himself: "... I didn't force him, he wanted to drink himself."
The situation just now was clear to everyone, but since he denied it, and there were no cameras here, Ottilie Taylor couldn't say much. She just gave him a deep look: "Don't let it happen again."
Mr. Hughes's expression froze. He was about to say something when Ottilie Taylor turned and left, pulling me along.
The moment Ottilie Taylor appeared, I knew things were not good. When she was about to leave with me, I instinctively wanted to push her away, but after hesitating for a moment, I still followed her.
She pulled me all the way to an empty spot far from the restaurant entrance, then fell silent.
I sneaked a glance at her, and her expression seemed to be one of regret.
It looks like she acted on impulse just now.
So the two of us stood there in awkward silence.
While I was thinking about how to explain my identity, she was pondering how to explain her behavior to me.
After a moment of silence, I decided to take the initiative: "How did you know it was me?"
Ottilie Taylor seemed surprised that I was so direct in bringing it up. She was startled, then lowered her head, looking like a child who had done something wrong: "... When you logged out of SnapChat last time, it popped up on the desktop. The avatar and nickname were the same."
"How did you know it was definitely me?" I asked.
As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized — so last time when she was asking about gifts and birthdays, she was testing me.
However...
Seeming to understand what I was thinking, she hesitantly said: "Don't you know that when you transfer money on PayPal, it shows the last character of the recipient's name?"
Beautiful!
So this girl knew I was lying to her from the beginning! And she slyly played along without saying anything!
I was speechless: "... Okay."
And so, the two of us fell into silence again.
I was thinking of saying something to ease the atmosphere when suddenly I saw a big drop of water fall to the ground.
I looked up in surprise — damn, why is this child crying again?
Before I could react, she seemed unable to hold back anymore. Tears streamed down her face as she frantically wiped them away, asking me between sobs: "... Can we not break up!"
Me: ?
When did I suggest breaking up?
But as the saying goes, a woman's tears are a man's excitement.
Seeing her cry with her nose and eyes all red, looking so pitiful, I shamefully got excited again.
"Okay, okay, we won't break up."
I grabbed her hand.
She seemed startled for a moment, then quickly grabbed my hand back, sniffling: "... Then, do you still like me?"
Do I like her?
I didn't know before.
But now...
"I do."
The next day when I went to the company, I noticed my colleagues looking at me strangely.
My heart skipped a beat.
Sure enough, when I arrived at my seat, Luke was there too.
As soon as he saw me, he put on a smile.
"Gus."
He came over, smiling: "I'm sorry about yesterday. I was out of line. You're not upset, are you?"
I forced a smile: "Of course not. I understand."
"That's good."
He looked relieved, then casually asked, "By the way, what's your relationship with VP Taylor — does she know you?"
"No."
I lied through my teeth, "We didn't know each other before. How could we know each other without any work interaction?"
He didn't believe me: "But I think I saw yesterday..." He seemed to have trouble saying it, "You two seemed to be holding hands...?"
After a pause, he added: "Not just me, many people in our company saw it."
