Chapter 7
Chapter 7
When he arrived, Mom and Dad were sitting on the couch, faces heavy with pain. Sophia sat beside them, tears streaming down her face, eyes red and nose pink.
"Brother, you're finally back. Sister was murdered!"
"The killer hasn't been found. Sister always offended people. I wonder if this time it was because..."
Dad's voice suddenly turned hoarse as he shouted, "Enough! The killer has been identified, and the police are already on the move! Your sister had no connections with him."
He and Mom exchanged glances, their eyes filled with pain. Upon learning that the killer was seeking revenge for their past actions against his brother, they couldn't handle the blow and both fainted.
Their least favorite daughter had died because of them. Sophia's eyes flashed with a hint of anxiety. She gripped the hem of her skirt tightly, cold sweat dripping from her forehead, "They found the killer so quickly. Why did he kill sister?"
Mom, looking weary and worn, spoke up, "Sophia, it's our fault we couldn't watch your match. It affected your performance."
My brother sneered, "She couldn't be happier if Emily never came back. Look at her, not a trace of sadness."
Sophia looked pitifully at my brother, shrinking into my mom's embrace, "Brother, I know you and sister are blood siblings, but you can't blame me for her death."
"I'll take care of Mom and Dad for her!"
Mom responded, touched. Initially, seeing her cry for me made my heart ache with a bittersweet feeling. But hearing her defend Sophia only made me feel unworthy.
Sophia had pushed me into the abyss. She was an accomplice in my demise. While alive, I always hoped Mom would see through Sophia's lies and protect me. But now, I only hoped they'd learn the truth.
My dad eyed Sophia suspiciously, quietly calling my brother upstairs. My mom continued to hold Sophia close, as if drawing warmth from her.
"Sophia, with your sister gone, you're my only daughter now."
Sophia cooed softly to my mom while impatiently tapping away on her phone.
"Sophia, are you hurt?" Mom noticed the red mark on her arm.
It was from when I scratched her as she gripped my chin. But Sophia explained, "A tennis ball hit me. It'll be fine by tomorrow."
Feeling a bit guilty, she pulled down her sleeve to cover the mark. Mom gave her a thoughtful look but didn't say more.
