Chapter 14 How Dare She Smile at Another Man?
Chapter 14 How Dare She Smile at Another Man?
The man on the phone sounded excited. "I didn't expect you to call me. Is anything wrong?"
"No. Nothing serious. Actually, Randy... I remember you're a lawyer, aren't you?" Gracelyn asked uncertainly.
Randy smiled, "Yeah. Why? Is there anything I can do for you?"
"I do have a favor to ask you. I wonder when you're free. I wanna talk to you face to face."
"How about tonight? I'm free tonight."
Thinking about it, Gracelyn nodded and answered, "Great. I'll send you the address later."
"Okay. I'll meet you there."
After Gracelyn hung up, she went to wash her face. Gracelyn felt sick as she looked in the mirror.
Gracelyn hated herself for being fooled by Patrick.
Based on her trust in Patrick, Gracelyn gave Patrick 35 thousand dollars without hesitation. However, she didn't expect that Patrick would turn against her because of the money. Gracelyn finally came to realize how shameless Patrick was.
Before Gracelyn got off work, she texted Jovanny, "I have other plans tonight, so I won't be able to make dinner for you. I'm sure Philip would like to dine with you."
Nevertheless, Jovanny didn't text her back. Even so, Gracelyn immediately left the office after work.
As soon as Jovanny was done with his job, he checked his phone and saw Gracelyn's message.
Jovanny wondered, "Other plans?"
After a glance at the message, Jovanny picked up his suit jacket and left.
Gracelyn sent Jovanny the message around 5 p.m., but Jovanny checked it two hours later. It would take Jovanny an hour or two to drive home. Believing he would meet Gracelyn there when he got home, Jovanny didn't text back.
Jovanny drove home. As Jovanny waited at a traffic light, he saw Gracelyn in a coffee shop.
However, Gracelyn wasn't alone. There was a man with her.
The man sat across from Gracelyn, talking. Jovanny even noticed that Gracelyn smiled when she looked at the man.
Jovanny complained in his mind, "So she's going on a date."
Jovanny was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. Though Jovanny and Gracelyn were a couple only in name, they were legally husband and wife.
Jovanny thought, "I can't believe that she's seeing another man before she takes care of the shit with her ex. What am I to her?"
While Jovanny's eyes were fixed upon Gracelyn, people behind were honking their car horns. With a sullen face, Jovanny withdrew his eyes and then stepped on the gas.
In the coffee shop, Gracelyn handed Randy all the papers.
"Thanks a lot, Randy."
Shaking his head, Randy smiled, "Never mind. I'm glad that I can help."
In his suit, Randy's smiling face looked warm.
In fact, Gracelyn and Randy weren't close friends. When Gracelyn was in college, she went to a party with her roommate. At that time, Gracelyn's roommate had a boyfriend from law school. As it happened, Randy was the roommate of Gracelyn's roommate's boyfriend.
Back then, Gracelyn paid little attention to her appearance. And she couldn't afford to dress up. Almost all of Gracelyn's and Randy's roommates were in a relationship after the party.
However, there was no spark between Gracelyn and Randy. To stop their friends from fixing them up, Gracelyn and Randy exchanged numbers and followed each other's Line accounts. After that, Gracelyn and Randy would give each other likes on social media from time to time, but they rarely chatted.
It wasn't until graduation that Gracelyn and Randy met again. After graduation, Randy poured himself into work. Thus, Gracelyn and Randy had less chance of talking.
Gracelyn collected her thoughts and replied with a smile, "Anyway, I owe you big."
"Rest assured. The evidence you collected is enough to win a case against him."
Randy looked down at the papers and continued, "But I'm surprised that you collected so much evidence. You even kept the receipt of gifts he bought for you."
Gracelyn tucked her loosened hair behind her ear. With a bitter smile, Gracelyn said, "Thanks to the legal knowledge you've shared on your Line account. I did benefit a lot from that."
Randy was stunned. He chuckled, "I'm so flattered. I have no idea you would take it seriously."
"I was thinking that it might come in handy someday. Well, it did."
Laughing, Randy put all the papers in his bag. "Alright, it's good to know that my perfectional knowledge was of great help to you, but it's getting late. If you don't mind, I can give you a ride home."
"That would be great. Thanks, Randy."
"You didn't have to," Randy replied, shaking his head.
It took Randy quite a while to drive Gracelyn home. In the car, Gracelyn and Randy both felt reserved. Randy tried to lighten things up by chatting with Gracelyn. Soon, they warmed up to each other.
"You know what? Dahlia is gonna get married next month."
Dahlia Kitchin was Gracelyn's college roommate, who introduced Randy to Gracelyn. Dahlia was nice to Gracelyn. Gracelyn felt lucky to have a friend like Dahlia.
"Really? I haven't seen Dahlia since graduation. Is she getting married to her college boyfriend? What's his name?" Gracelyn couldn't remember the name of Dahlia's boyfriend.
"No. They broke up. Dahlia is getting married to a new guy."
Gracelyn looked surprised and said, "You know everything, don't you?"
"I'll take that as a compliment. It was Cedric who told me that. Cedric failed his licensing exam again last year, and he... Well, forget it."
Though Randy stopped talking about Cedric, Gracelyn knew it more or less, so she changed the subject.
"What about you? Haven't you found someone that you want to settle up with?"
"Me?" Randy chuckled as he looked at the traffic light, "I don't even have a girlfriend."
"No way! How's that possible? You're an eligible man."
"I'm so swamped. I don't have time for a relationship."
"Alright..."
Soon, the car drove into the neighborhood.
Gracelyn got off the car and waved goodbye. "Thank you, Randy. I'll treat you to a meal when everything settles."
Randy tilted his head and answered, smiling, "I'm looking forward to it."
Gracelyn couldn't help but giggle.
Watching over all of this upstairs, Jovanny smiled coldly and sat on the couch.
As Gracelyn entered the house, she saw a man sitting on the couch, with his arms crossed in front of his chest. Gracelyn felt his cold eyes fixing upon her.
The atmosphere was thick with awkwardness. It reminded Gracelyn of how she felt when her grandmother caught her misbehaving as a kid.
The spine-chilling aura from Jovanny somehow frightened Gracelyn.
"Why are you still up?" There was a little anxiety in Gracelyn's voice.
"I'm not sleepy."
Gracelyn turned to look at the clock on the wall. "It's almost 11 p.m. It's getting late," Gracelyn replied.
As soon as she finished her sentence, Gracelyn realized that she had come home so late.
Gracelyn wondered, "Is that why Jovanny sounded unfriendly?"
