Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Half a year later, I successfully graduated from university and received an offer from a prestigious school abroad.
I was hesitating between going abroad for graduate studies and inheriting the family business.
My parents firmly supported me going abroad. They said I had suffered enough in my first twenty years.
What they could make up for was to fulfill all my wishes, to let me do whatever I wanted.
My dad flexed his still-strong biceps.
"Dad can still look after the business for you. It's not too late for you to take over after you graduate."
So I chose to go abroad for graduate school.
In the days before I left, I couldn't bear to be apart from my parents.
Later, my parents took me to change my name. I finally had a surname of my own.
Looking at the "Emily Bay" on my ID card, tears streamed down my face as I traced those three words over and over.
My mom, heartbroken over all I had suffered, transferred the family's real estate to my name in advance.
I didn't want to accept, but she said it was to cut off Jason's hopes.
Jason indeed wasn't behaving himself.
He would occasionally send things our parents liked to the house, but they were all thrown out.
Later, he started calling frequently, but the housekeeper or nanny would hang up.
Then Jason began harassing me.
He cursed me as a demon who had been causing harm since birth, saying he wished he had pushed me into the lake to drown when I was two.
Unfortunately, no matter how vicious his words were, they couldn't provoke any emotion in me.
The little affection that had existed between us was completely gone.
After I blocked Jason, I had a few days of peace.
But then Chloe started harassing me.
As soon as I picked up the phone, I heard crying.
"Emily, please don't hang up. I'm begging you, help me."
She had always been good at playing the victim. I didn't hang up, but I just wanted to see what act she was putting on this time.
"Emily, I'm pregnant. Jason kicked me out, and I don't have a penny to my name."
"Can you help me?"
She became more and more agitated as she spoke, even crying out loud.
"That bastard Jason has been drinking at home since he got fired. He even took the house away."
"I really have nowhere to go."
I said "Oh."
"Then go to the police."
I hung up after saying that.
Later, Chloe still found our parents and confessed about her pregnancy.
Afraid she might do something desperate, our parents agreed to give them some money, as long as they lived well and raised their child.
Jason agreed.
On their wedding day, the three of us didn't attend.
We all knew Jason only agreed to marry for the money.
Less than a month after they got married, Chloe had a miscarriage.
Jason probably thought the child was a burden, or maybe it was just his beastly nature.
When he was drunk, he beat Chloe until she miscarried.
Because of this, he went to jail for rehabilitation.
Our parents didn't step in to help him. They focused all their attention on me.
Every item I needed for studying abroad was carefully selected by them.
The night before I left, I suddenly had second thoughts.
"Dad, Mom, maybe I shouldn't go. Even though it's competitive here, I could try for graduate school in China."
My mom put her finger on my forehead, the ultimate East Asian control technique.
"Don't be ridiculous. You can go because you're excellent. You must seize this opportunity!"
My dad also smiled at me from the side.
"You can come back anytime you're homesick. It's not like we can't afford plane tickets."
Despite these words, the reluctance to leave still tormented me.
Early the next morning, I cried in my bed.
My eyes were red and puffy.
At the security check, I hugged my parents goodbye.
"Don't stay up late, don't eat junk food, take your medicine on time."
My dad nodded.
Mom patted my shoulder.
"Have a safe journey."
Looking back every few steps, for a moment, I seemed to see the Emily from my previous life waving at me through the crowd.
Her lips were moving, as if saying,
"This time, you must be truly happy!"
I nodded, saying in my heart,
I definitely will be.
