Chapter 7
Chapter 7
My dad was unconscious when he was loaded into the ambulance, but he was still calling my brother's name.
My mom had also passed out from extreme shock.
As the red light of the operating room lit up, I stood alone outside.
My brother and Chloe walked up to me, arm in arm.
"What happened! Your usual antics are one thing, but how could you let Dad get hurt!"
I looked at him coldly, with no energy to argue.
I just said flatly,
"The kidnapper did it."
My brother, Jason, immediately started jumping up and down.
"How dare the actor you hired actually hurt someone! What do you think our Bay family is? Mom and Dad must have been blind to bring you back!"
Chloe looked quite smug beside him.
"Looks like your plan backfired. I told you you'd end up hurting yourself sooner or later."
"Blood relation or not, I'm still better than you even though I'm adopted."
Jason caressed her face, looking very sweet, without any concern for our parents.
Even now, they still thought I was acting, and kept humiliating me.
The officer in charge of the case walked over from nearby.
"Emily, sign this statement. Don't worry too much, your uncle will be fine."
Jason snatched the statement, surprising the officer.
"Jason Bay! Where have you been? Do you know what your parents went through? Your sister almost got hurt too!"
Jason still looked incredulous after reading the statement.
"You're not going to say these were actors I hired too? This is your colleague you see every day."
I stood up and glared at Jason.
"You'd better pray Mom and Dad are okay, or I'm not done with you!"
All the anger and resentment accumulated over two lifetimes exploded.
Jason clearly showed a hint of panic, but quickly covered it up with forced calmness.
Chloe stepped in front of him, trying to act tough.
"Don't blame him. Blame me if you must. Mom and Dad won't scold me anyway, you'll be the one getting yelled at in the end."
Chloe had a smug look on her face.
"How can you compete with me? I bet they abandoned you on purpose when you were two. You're just an unwanted child!"
I couldn't hold back anymore. I stood up and slapped her.
"Slap!"
The crisp sound stunned everyone present.
"I won't argue with you about what you say about me, but Mom and Dad would never abandon me on purpose."
I had to thank the kidnappers for this. In that moment of life and death, the wall between my parents and me had completely crumbled.
I understood their guilt for losing me, and their deep, inexpressible love.
Jason angrily shielded Chloe.
"You're just..."
He said a few words then suddenly stopped, as if realizing some consequence.
"The surgery is over. Family members, please come over."
Jason and I both rushed towards the doctor.
