Chapter Twenty-Seven
Chapter Twenty-Seven
A Secret Being Kept
Lily’s POV
I fell asleep not long after I had gotten settled in the library room. The dream I had was nothing short of strange and alarming.
A woman appeared in my dreams who I had never seen before. The only thing that caught me off guard was her eyes. In the middle, they were yellow but at the ends, they were red–just like Zack’s.
Was she his mother? A daughter? A lover?
Whoever she was, all I knew was that she was a lycan. I only knew that because I saw her giving blood to someone else–another man.
Maybe it was her lover…
I watched the man as he drank her blood and the cuts and bruises on him faded in a matter of seconds. Whoever this man was, it seemed like he meant a lot to the woman.
I wanted to ask her, so I tried stepping out in front of her and waving my hand. However, she didn’t react and walked right through me.
It was as if I was nothing more than just a ghost.
I followed the woman towards a beach as she began to take off her clothes. I wanted to look away but my attention shifted to a mark that was on her back.
The woman shifted into her wolf form and laid in the sand. I thought she was going to sleep when I saw a circle of flames surround her.
I was trying to yell to grab her attention but it didn’t work. Soon, the flames reached her coat and she began to howl in pain. She even tried to run into the ocean but nothing worked.
I watched helplessly as the wolf before me was consumed by the fire.
Then suddenly, I woke up to my face being wet. I wiped away the water realizing they were tears. Who was that woman and why would I cry for someone I don’t know…?
I thought about asking Zack about it tonight but was startled by the sounds of him yelling. I looked out the library window to see a fire in the backyard and Zack looking frustrated.
When he looked up at the window and saw me, he stomped back inside.
I was curious as to what his problem was and I wanted to go talk to him immediately because of the dream I had. Still, I knew I had to wait until it was clear for me to leave the room.
I laid back down on the little futon couch until the door swung wide open. On the other side was Zack.
“We’re leaving,” Zack said in a serious tone.
“Wait, what? Why?”
Zack groaned and pulled me off the couch. He hurriedly went around the room and put all of my stuff back in my bags. Then he shoved them in my hands before rushing off.
“Wait!” I ran for him with the bags in my hands.
I found Zack back in our room packing his things, too. I put my hand on his and gave him a light squeeze.
“Zack, I don’t understand. Why are you in such a hurry to leave?”
“Lily!” Zack whined. “It’s not going to kill you to just listen to me and ask questions later, okay?”
I hesitantly nodded my head and helped Zack pack. Once we were done, we went downstairs to find Cerberus and leave.
However, neither of us was expecting to see Isabella at the bottom of the stairs.
Isabella looked up at me with disbelief. Then her eyes darted to Zack.
Before she could even open her mouth, Zack placed his hand over Isabella’s mouth and drugged her away. “Go find Cerberus now, Lily!” He yelled.
Overwhelmed and confused, I just did as I was told and went outside to find Cerberus. I found him in the backyard running around, and I led him to the front yard.
One by one I took our bags–we had two each–and placed them on Cerberus’s back. Cerberus looked at me with a confused look.
“Where are we going?” He asked.
I shrugged my shoulders looking back at the mansion. “I wish I could tell you but… I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Zack about that.”
I sat outside for what seemed like half an hour when Zack finally came out from the mansion. When I walked up to him, I noticed smoke coming out from one of the windows.
“Zack… what happened in there? Where’s Isabella?”
Zack didn’t answer me and instead put me on Cerberus’s back and climbed behind me. Patting Cerberus, the beast began to run from the mansion.
When I looked back, the once beautiful home that hid an ugly truth suddenly burst into flames.
“Zack!” I screamed. “What happened back there? Where’s Isabella?”
In truth, I didn’t care for the spy at all, not how she was trying to steal Zack from me and replace me. But I still couldn’t help but feel bad for her.
Zack still didn’t answer my question as we continued to run away to a place unknown. Well, unknown to me.
I looked around to see where we were headed and to see if I could find anything recognizable about our surroundings. We passed a familiar set of gates that led to a trail through a forest. I knew immediately that we were passing the way to Shining Star Hills–my home.
Before I could say anything, Zack threw a jacket over my head and held me down. Then his hand came around and held my mouth shut.
Not knowing what was going on, I laid still against Cerberus’s back. But that was when I heard the voices of my pack.
“Murderer!”
“Monster!”
“You took Lily away from us!”
“Killer!”
“How could you take an innocent life like that?!”
“Tyrant!”
I recognized the voices of friends and family members I had to leave behind. Hearing their voices was like a punch to the gut,
“You’ll pay for taking our Lily from us!” I heard my mom cry out.
“You’ll burn in hell for this!” My dad screamed.
The pain in their voices made me sob uncontrollably. After not hearing their voices in over a month, hearing them cry and yell in anguish broke my heart.
After some time had passed and Zack took the coat off of me, I took in a breath of fresh air to help calm me down. As I processed everything I heard, I looked up at Zack with tears in my eyes.
“Why do they think I’m dead?”
