Chapter Fourty

– The Will of the Goddess

Lily’s POV

“Sounds like a ton of bullshit,” Zack spat out a clot of blood.

Mary shook her head. “I promise that I’m only here to help you, Your Majesty. My kind–wizards and other witches–you know how reclusive we are. We don’t actively go out seeking trouble.”

“Yeah, but you sure as hell don’t fucking help with ending any trouble.” Anger burned in Zack’s eyes.

I placed my hand on Zack’s arm gently, trying to give him a reassuring squeeze. His body was still on fire and at this point, I didn’t see how we couldn’t at least hear the witch out.

We were running out of options and already made a ton of enemies. If someone was willing to help us, we could at least give them the courtesy to hear what they had to say.

“We’d love to accept your word, Mary, but it’s just really hard for us because we don’t know who to trust.” I began to explain to her.

“Maybe if you show us that we can trust you, it’d be a different story.” I smiled at Mary.

Mary returned my smile. “My cottage is just a few feet away. Let’s take His Majesty inside and I’ll you everything I know.”

Mary helped me with getting Zack inside of the little cottage house. Once we got him indoors and on the bed, he passed out.

I gave Mary a worried look. “He told me he was dying because he couldn’t control his Fire Wolf…”

Mary nodded as she began to boil some water on a stove. Going into her cabinet, she pulled out a jar of herbs that she was going to use for tea.

Mary pulled out two seats at a nearby table and urged me to sit. “Tell me something, Lily. What all do you know about His Majesty?”

I wanted to tell her about everything I knew in the journal I had on me, but I still wasn’t sure if I could trust her. The journal spoke about a witch helping out the werewolves by gifting them a silver dagger to kill Zack.

What if Mary was that very witch?

I shook my head and decided to play dumb. “I don’t know much… On my 18th birthday, I was chosen along with 99 other girls to be His Majesty’s maid… I know that he’s ruthless. I’ve watched him kill 2 of the girls that were with me.”

I looked back at Zack’s sleeping face, a mixture of worry and happiness filled my heart. “Aside from that, I don’t know much else.”

“Luna Lily–”

“I’m not his Luna, Mary.” I gave her a half-smile. “I’m just his maid.”

Mary rolled her eyes. “Please, don’t take this witch for a fool. I understand that not many of the supernatural world have interacted with us, so some of you may think it easy to manipulate us, but I promise you that’s not the case.”

Mary got up from the chair and grabbed my backpack from the bed. When she took the journal out, I couldn’t help but let out a gasp.

Mary gave me a raised eyebrow.

“I- I’m sorry, it’s just that… that’s really important and personal to me.” I blushed out of nervousness.

“Oh, I’m sure.” Mary flipped the pages of the journal in one swift motion before landing on one of the pages. She placed the journal in front of me on the table.

The page she turned to had the notes and drawings of the silver dagger. As I was looking at it, Mary threw the same dagger onto the table.

“Mary…” My voice was barely above a whisper.

When I looked at her, there was a sense of guilt in her eyes.

“I’m the witch that this person wrote about in their journal.”

“I don’t understand… How did you even come into its possession? Did you make it? Did someone else make it?” A wave of emotions was hitting me.

“How can you say you want to help us but you literally have the weapon that will kill him?” I began to raise my voice.

Mary took in a deep breath and looked at me calmly. “If you’d allow me to explain everything, you’ll have the answers you need–including the one where you end up saving your beloved.”

I bit my tongue so I could listen to what Mary had to say.

“The witches and wizards of the supernatural world are few because there are not many of us that can take on the responsibilities this path asks of us. The main thing is that we act as conduits for the gods.” Mary began to explain.

“There are many deities out there that we serve whose messages we send unto the world–either literally through word of mouth or actions on their behalf. In particular, I serve our Moon Goddess. She chose me to be her conduit several decades ago–I’ve been her faithful priestess ever since.” Mary smiled fondly as if she were speaking of the goddess as a mother figure.

“As you should know, the Moon Goddess rules over the beast kin of the night–werewolves, lycans, and even vampires. But even as a goddess, she still had human-like characteristics one of which was favoritism. I’m sure you know which race of beast kin she favored.” Mary looked at me with knowing eyes.

“The lycans…?”

Mary nodded her head. “The lycans were blessed by the Moon Goddess in strength, intelligence, and powers. There’s a story that the Fire Wolf found in select lycans are remnants of the Moon Goddess’s former lover–who was a werewolf.”

“If the Moon Goddess favored the lycans, then why isn’t she helping Zack? And all of those atrocities committed against his people?”

There was a sadness in Mary’s eyes. “I know it’s going to sound like a lot but I need you to know that what I’m telling you is the truth.”

“The Moon Goddess sent me a message one night in my dreams. She told me that a lycan was going to be born who would bear the terrible weight of the Fire Wolf’s power. Even the Moon Goddess knew that the Fire Wolf was an untameable beast who needed to be killed–that’s why she crafted the silver dagger.”

My eyes widened in shock. “Wait, the silver dagger was crafted by the Moon Goddess?!”

Mary nodded her eyes. “It was the will of the Moon Goddess that Zack dies to begin with.”

I got up from the chair and sat next to Zack on the bed. Stroking his hair gently, I just couldn’t believe that the Moon Goddess I prayed to for his protection was the one who wanted him dead in the first place.

Tears welled in my eyes. “Why?! Why would the Moon Goddess do this?!”
