Chapter Thirty-Nine
Chapter Thirty-Nine
– I’ll Follow You
Lily’s POV
I buried my head into Zack’s chest as I prayed to the Moon Goddess over and over. I just wanted to wake up from this nightmare.
When Cerberus smashed through the gate, relief washed over me. In groups of three’s, he snatched the guards and swallowed them whole. I didn’t realize that his favorite meal was the bodies of his enemies.
Once Cerberus was able to clear a path for me, Zack gently set me down and turned his back to me.
“Run for Cerberus now! He’ll protect you with his life!” He ordered me.
Without hesitation, I dashed Cerberus and heard Alpha Leo screaming at his guards to catch me.
“Don’t let the Lycan King’s whore escape!”
Zack let out a roar that rippled through the air but I didn’t look back. The sounds of his claws shredding enemies apart were already more than I could bear.
As I ran up to Cerberus, there was a brief window where he was able to lean down enough for me to jump on his back. I yelled for Zack.
“I’m safe! Come on! Let’s go!”
“No!” Zack growled as he punched a werewolf in the face. “I’ll fend them off! I’ll catch up with you soon!”
“I’m not leaving you!” Tears, that I didn’t know formed, and began to spill from my eyes.
“God damn it, Lily! Get the fuck out of here, now!” Zack took in a deep breath and released a stream of fire from his mouth.
The fire was enough of a signal for Cerberus. The beast promptly turned around and proceeded to run away from the city.
I couldn’t help but look back hopelessly until Zack’s figure was swarmed by werewolves.
I laid on Cerberus’s back and cried. Normally, I would’ve had hope for Zack and his capabilities. Hell, even what I saw back at the house and again at the gate would’ve been convincing enough that he would’ve made it out alive.
But once Zack told me he was dying because he was losing control over his Fire Wolf, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread. Especially since he lost control again already and it hasn’t even been a full day.
I tried to wipe the tears away as they came. I continued to pray to the Moon Goddess for comfort and strength.
The more and more distant the city grew, the more anxious I became. I knew at that moment that I didn’t care about what he had done or how he was keeping his secrets from me.
I wanted him here with me. I needed him here with me.
Just as I was starting to close my eyes, a sudden figure landed on Cerberus’s back. I jumped up and was about to scream until they pulled me in for a hug.
When they pulled back, I was finally able to get a look at their face. It was Zack—and he was in his human form!
“Zack, by the Goddess, you made it!” I squealed.
Zack scoffed and gave me a playfully threatening look. “What? Does my mate want me to die or something?”
I gave him a reassuring look and a smile. “No, but your mate was worried as hell…”
Zack gave me a cocky grin. “They can’t get rid of me that easily, babe.”
Zack held me in his arms for a little bit before letting me go and collapsing. When I brought my hand to his forehead, I was surprised to still feel him burning up.
I remember him saying that killing usually satisfied the Fire Wolf but with Zack still basically on fire, it was obvious that nothing was satisfying the beast within.
I hated that Zack was going through this and I wanted nothing more than to take the pain away from him. He had already been through so much.
“You deserve to know peace…” I whispered and pushed back the wet hair from his face.
I leaned down and kissed Zack softly. At first, it hurt badly because his skin was still. But I didn’t care. I wanted to show him that I cared for him and wasn’t going to leave his side.
To my surprise, as I kept my lips against his, the temperature in his body fell slightly. It hurt less to kiss him.
I laid next to Zack and draped my arm over him. I hugged him close as Cerberus continued to run.
I didn’t know where he was taking us to, but I didn’t care. At that moment I knew that wherever Zack went, I was going to follow him.
I’d follow Zack to the ends of the Earth. That’s when I knew that I truly loved him.
———
I didn’t know when I passed out. But when I woke up, I sat up and saw that Cerberus had stopped running.
I pulled out my phone to see if I could open my Maps app. I thought that maybe I’d be able to find out where we were.
To my dismay, it was dead.
Shit… I should’ve charged it while I was reading yesterday.
I looked up at the sky and saw a faint red and orange gradient peak out from above the trees. Cerberus must have run for miles if it was already about to be morning. Last time I checked the clock, it was around 10 p.m. before we left.
Looking around us, I saw that we were surrounded by a forest. No one was around us but the only signs of someone maybe having lived here was the little cottage home that sat in the opening.
I looked down at Zack’s sleeping face and smiled. I watched as his chest rose and fell as his breathing remained stable.
“Well, we’re safe for now,” I spoke to him as if he were awake. “There’s a cottage here and while the yard isn’t big, we can make it work.”
“We can start to build our home.” I smiled at him.
“Just be sure to build your home away from mine.” A woman’s voice spoke.
I looked around frantically but found no one. For a second, I thought that my mind was playing tricks on me.
But when I turned back to look at Zack, I saw a woman hovering right behind him.
I jumped back, whimpering out of fear. “Who are you? What do you want?”
As if sensing my fear, Zack immediately sat up and placed himself between me and the woman. I could tell he was weak because of the way his body swayed. He almost fell over a few times.
“Answer… her… fucking… question,” Zack growled through labored breathing. “Who the fuck are you? And what the fuck do you want?” He bit off the last word.
The woman got down on her knees. She raised her hands and flipped them to show us that she was unarmed.
A sincere smile spread across her lips. “My name is Mary and I’m a witch—I want to help you, Lycan King Zack, and Luna Lily.”
