Chapter Six
Chapter Six
Lily’s POV
The morning sunlight was harsh against my eyes–especially since I barely got any sleep last night. After my encounter with the Lycan King, and him proposing that I become his personal maid, my mind wouldn’t stop racing with worried thoughts.
Well, there goes my plan of trying to avoid the Lycan King… Why couldn’t he just pick someone who actually wanted to be close to him? Like Anny?
After I got ready, I made my way to the main palace, trying my hardest to take the slowest steps I possibly could.
I need to make sure that I serve the Lycan King well enough so he doesn’t kill me. Would he be okay if I acted cold and distant? Does he like being showered with compliments?
When I looked up to see where I was, a shiver went down my spine when I realized that I was already getting close to the main palace.
Shit. Well, let’s just be careful for now. Only speak when spoken to, address him with respect, and do as he says.
As I approached the door to the main palace, I was surprised to see another face here–Anny. To be fair though, I probably shouldn’t have been.
Anny wore another skin-tight dress that hugged the curves of her body. This one was also just as short as the hot pink one she was dressed in the first day we got here. The main difference was that there was a deep v-cut that accentuated and showed off her cleavage.
She also wore makeup but it was more natural-looking aside from the bright-red lipstick.
I looked down at my simple and comfortable outfit: black leggings and a t-shirt. Even though I knew I was going to appear before a king, I figured that a maid’s outfit needed to be more practical and adaptable for any job.
Plus, it wasn’t my intention to attract his affections, much less his attention. Nor did I believe him to be the kind to care about the appearance of the servants he could kill at any moment.
I looked over at Anny’s hands to see that she was holding a tray filled with a hearty breakfast. I admired the amount of food that was on it.
A fruit medley consisting of strawberries, blueberries, and sliced bananas; a staff of 3 pancakes and 3 waffles, topped with syrup and powdered sugar; scrambled eggs topped off with black pepper; and an assortment of sausage links, patties, and bacon.
My stomach grumbled. I probably should’ve eaten before I came here…
I took my spot next to Anny when she cleared her throat to get my attention.
“Lily? What are you going here?”
“Reporting for duty,” I couldn’t even muster up the strength to fake enthusiasm. “Here to do whatever needs to be done.”
“He called for you?”
I nodded my head.
Anny snickered. “Why don’t you just leave it all to me? I’m sure whatever he needs, I can handle it just fine–and then some.”
I rolled my eyes. “I appreciate your enthusiasm but I don’t think ignoring his call would be the smartest decision.”
I’m pretty sure “ignoring the call of the Lycan King” wasn’t one of the things we were told to do anyway.
“Come on, Lily. You tested your luck with cleaning out Cerberus’s kennel and against the odds, you made it back alive. Don’t be stupid and test it again this time. Especially since it’s so obvious by your attitude that you don’t even want to be here.”
There was no denying that Anny was right about the part of me not wanting to be here, but she sure as hell was wrong about luck being the reason why I made it back from cleaning Cerberus’s cage.
I could explain it to her… Tell her everything about what happened yesterday–at least with Cerberus. I’m sure she’d freak out if I told her that I literally woke up with the Lycan King’s finger in my mouth…
“Lily…” Anny tried to coerce me again. “I know that ‘bad boys’ aren’t your type. Just leave so you won’t get yourself killed for coming here to disturb the Lycan King with your poor attitude.”
On second thought… I don’t really have the drive to explain anything to her.
“Lily–”
Anny was interrupted by a low growl coming from inside the palace.
I knew instantly that it was Cerberus just by the way that it shook handles on the door. My instincts were telling me that it had to have meant the king was in a bad mood.
The door opened slightly and from the inside, I heard the Lycan King call for me.
“Cerberus, get Lily inside of the palace. Now.”
One of Cerberus’s heads peered out from behind the door as he looked at me. Looking over at Anny, he let out a low growl as he bared his teeth.
Anny took a step back.
I looked back at Anny and mouthed “good luck” before going inside the main palace and shutting the door behind me.
My steps echoed off the walls as I slowly closed the distance between me and the Lycan King. He stood in front of the grand pool with his shirt off and arms crossed.
I knelt before him to show my respects as I kept my eyes glued to the floor.
“There’s someone else out there.”
He didn’t phrase it as a question.
I nodded my head.
We stayed silent for a few moments until a knock came at the door.
My heart dropped to the pits of my stomach. What the hell is she doing?!
Then another knock.
“Oh, Your Majesty?” Anny’s voice invaded the palace halls. “I hope you’re hungry! I’ve come with a hearty breakfast–fit for a king such as yourself!”
I swallowed my nervousness and took a glance up at the Lycan King. His eyebrows were knitted together as his face was contorted into a mixture of pain and annoyance.
“Your Majesty?” Anny’s voice was a bit louder as she knocked on the door again.
A growl emerged from the back of the Lycan King’s throat and even I could feel the anger that reverberated through it. I immediately snapped my head back down to the floor.
“Cerberus…” He growled through his teeth.
In an instant, Cerberus flew out of the palace doors and I already knew what was about to happen. Anny’s terrifying screams ended just as soon as they started.
My chest swelled with panic but I stayed rooted to the floor.
After a few moments, Cerberus came trotting back inside and heavily panting. The smell of iron wafted to my nostrils.
“Do you know why Anny died?”
I shook my head, unable to meet his burning gaze.
“She was being too fucking loud.”
In one swift motion, the Lycan King pulled me from the ground and carried me to the edge of the pool in the middle of the palace.
I stood there in stiffly as he took off his shirt before getting into the pool. When his foot made contact with the water, I watched as steam left his body.
Zack pulled me into his arms and lifted me off the ground. Instinctively, I put my hand against his chest.
His skin was hot to the touch but I couldn’t get over how strong his body felt against mine.
I met his intense gaze with blushed cheeks.
Zack scoffed and carried me into the pool as steam surrounded us and blurred my vision.
