Chapter Nine
A Test Of Loyalty
Lily’s POV
The Lycan King huffed with a smile on his face. “If you want to attack me, Lily, know that this is your only chance to do so.”
I shook my head and threw my knife on the floor. “I… I can’t. I don’t want to!”
All I wanted to do was just survive this nightmare, not actively participate in it. I took the blanket and held it up to my face to obscure my vision; undoubtedly the fight was going to get more chaotic and brutal.
Once the Lycan King was able to pull out the knife from his back, he made his way out of the center of the palace. The bedroom door stayed open so I was able to see everything from a safe distance.
That was when I saw all of the other maids come rushing in and soon, their presence surrounded him and drowned out his figure.
He’s outnumbered! There’s no way he gets out of this battle alive.
The warcries of the maids soon echoed throughout the hall as they all charged after the Lycan King. A sudden flash of bright orange light staggered the girls, and the appearance of the Fire Wolf towered over all of them.
“Give me all you’ve got!” The Fire Wolf taunted.
I was surprised to see that most of the girls had some sort of training when it came to fighting. They were throwing real punches and even using each other as leverage to try and jump on his back.
But they were no match for the Fire Wolf no matter how hard they tried. He was faster and more keenly aware of his surroundings.
At one point, four of the girls held down his arms and legs, while two others flanked from behind. To be honest, it looked like he was only pretending to be held down in place.
When the girls lept into the air to get on his back, the Fire Wolf was able to free himself so fast that I barely saw it happen. All I knew was that the girls who held his limbs were now knocked to the floor and that he caught the other two girls in mid-air.
He threw the girls he caught into the pool as he looked at the others with a smirk. “Don’t tell me this is all you’ve got?”
Some of them brought weapons with them–probably what they had stashed away and hidden in their luggage. There were kitchen knives, scissors, and even rope. One of them even got a hold of throwing knives.
And then came another round of fighting but with weapons. The Fire Wolf decided that he would also meet their level and unsheathe his claws. That’s when I knew things were going to get worse.
One of the maids was able to get a small slash on the side of his arm. The Fire Wolf retaliated with a swift swipe to her face.
The girl fell to her knees as her ear-piercing screams echoed throughout the main palace. I could smell the iron from the bedroom.
That made the Fire Wolf even angrier. “Shut up!” He roared.
With another swipe of his claws, he went straight for the girl’s neck–killing her instantly. Her body slumped to the ground.
The fighting stopped for a few moments as the girls tried to process what had happened. Their rallying cries got even louder but that also just increased the Fire Wolf’s rage.
“Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!”
The Fire Wolf continued to fight, taking every cut, stab, punch, and kick like it didn’t affect him. The Fire Wolf repelled more attacks than he took, however. He disarmed many of the girls who charged at him with their knives and swiftly dodged each projectile thrown at him.
His speed and endurance were unmatched. I could tell that the girls were starting to get tired. Many of them backed out of the fight as they lay on the ground, trying to regain themselves.
It was then that I saw the red-headed girl, Mia, charge at the Lycan King. It was my first time seeing her since the fighting began.
Where has she been all this time? I figured she was going to be the one to lead the battle.
I watched her closely when I noticed that she was reaching into her coat to pull out something. A flash of silver caught my attention and that’s when I knew.
The silver dagger from the west tower! That’s the same one the Fire Wolf told me to get to use on the Lycan King to kill him.
The Fire Wolf’s head immediately snapped to Mia, his face contorting in pain. It must have been easy for him to detect silver with how sensitive his senses were.
The Fire Wolf balled his hands into a fist and punched Mia so hard that it sent her flying back into one of the stone pillars. Mia hit it so hard that the sound of her ribs cracking bounced off the walls.
I flinched hard. She’s got to be dead…
When Mia wobbly brought herself to her feet, it was then I realized just how weakened the Fire Wolf was. I looked around to see that the only girl the Fire Wolf managed to kill was the one he clawed in the back of the neck.
Everyone else was just exhausted and sitting out of the fight.
Mia rushed for the dagger and ran up to the Fire Wolf again and this time, she managed to stab him directly in the stomach.
I suppressed a gasp with the blanket.
The Fire Wolf threw Mia towards the pillar and continued to ward off the waves of girls that rushed him. Although he fought boldly, the effects of the silver were beginning to take its toll.
The Fire Wolf vomited blood when he suddenly shifted back into his human form.
I looked over at Mia who was also coughing up blood. Light was leaving her eyes and I knew that she was on the verge of dying. With the last of her strength, she threw the silver dagger at the bedroom door.
“L-Lily… You have to be the one to kill him! N-now’s your chance to end this once and for all!”
I looked at the Lycan King who had no ounce of fear on his face. He laid on the ground without bracing himself as if he was expecting me to go through with it.
“I… I’m sorry, Mia. But I can’t.”
I walked up to the Lycan King and draped his arm over my shoulder as I escorted him back into the bedroom. I knew that this was a test of loyalty and if I failed, I was going to end up dead.
The fact that he saved me also meant that, in my mind, I owed him the same courtesy. Plus, the Blue Moon Pack never trained us for battle since we all lived peaceful lives.
I don’t have the stomach to take another life… No matter how terrible they are.
The Lycan King looked up at me with an evil smile on his face as he took the blanket and placed it over my head. When I looked out, I saw that he was no longer in the room.
The smell of burning flesh and the sounds of bloodcurdling screams filled the palace. Soon, the flames consumed everything around me.
When I rushed to the bedroom window to go outside and escape, I saw that everything around the palace was also being devoured by the flames.
Then a howl pierced the burning night sky.
