Chapter Eight
Chapter Eight
Lily’s POV
My mind was too busy racing with thoughts and questions from my encounter with the Fire Wolf.
First, I was able to understand Cerberus and even have a brief conversation with him. Now I was able to do the same thing with the Fire Wolf.
When I was young, I was always told that werewolves got a certain ability once they turned 18. They wouldn’t find out until then because it also depended on the wolf that adopted them.
With me being wolfless, I figured that having an ability was completely out of the picture.
Except it’s totally not and it’s saved my life, My ability seems to be that I can communicate with animals… Or beasts.
I was pulled from my thoughts once I felt the temperature of the water drop even more. Looking over at the Lycan King, I also realized that his head against my shoulder felt colder than it did before.
People who feel cold like this usually end up being sick, but since he’s been so warm because of the Fire Wolf, maybe his body is just getting to a regular temperature…
But then his body kept getting colder.
Shit… I have to make sure he’s okay.
I stared at the Lycan King with nervousness. He was a brutal individual but didn’t seem to want to cause me any harm. If anything, he was just completely indifferent to me being here.
He treated me less harshly and seemed to want my company. Me being alive and here has to be some sort of special treatment.
That has to count for something.
I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat and worked up the courage to raise my hand towards the Lycan King’s forehead. I needed to make sure that he wasn’t going into shock from the sudden temperature change in his body.
But as I got my hand out of the water and barely above his shoulders, the Lycan King swiftly wrapped his large hand around my throat.
With my airways closed, I was struggling to breathe. Panic surged throughout my body as I tried to shove my fingers underneath his grip.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” The Lycan King growled. His eyes burned holes into my fading vision.
As strength was beginning to leave my body, I took my free hand and pointed it towards my forehead, then to his.
“S-s… s-sick…?”
He stared at me for a few moments when his hardened expression softened. He let go of my neck and leaned back against the pool wall.
“Next time you want to check my forehead to see if I’m sick like you’re my mother, at least have the decency to announce what your intentions are. I won’t be so kind next time.”
I took in two deep breaths as I nodded my head. Noted…
———
A week had passed and at this point, the Lycan King had asked me to move into his palace. I thought he was going to unload a ton of work on me but to my surprise, my main two jobs were to sit with him in the pool and lay with him in bed.
Well, that and take care of Cerberus. The Lycan King picked up on how Cerberus seemed to like me, so he told me I’d be the one to feed him, play with him, and clean out his kennel.
There were a few times when he’d leave me alone in the main palace. One day that he left me alone, someone had snuck into the palace. I was surprised to see that it was Katelyn.
“Katelyn! What are you doing here? You can’t be here or–”
“God, please shut up, Lily!” She rolled her eyes. “I just need you to listen to me, alright?”
I nodded my head.
“I know you’re trying to be some holier-than-thou goody-two-shoes, but we have a new moon coming up in seven days and that’ll be our only shot to do something.”
Katelyn continued. “I found this journal when I was snooping around the other wings of this damned castle. Read what it says for yourself and maybe you’ll actually want to help us get out of this hell-hole instead of play housewife to the Lycan King.”
I took the old leather journal from Katelyn and skimmed the page she had it open to. My eyes widened in shock. “The Great Purge?”
Katelyn nodded her head. “Whoever wrote this said that the Lycan King had used fire to kill and sacrifice the last batch of maids he had. I don’t know how long ago this was written but I don’t like our odds.”
“So what does this have to do with the new moon?”
“I thought you Blue Moon Pack people were supposed to be smart.” Katelyn rolled her eyes. “Anyway, the new moon is when he’s at his weakest. It’s the only time that we’ll be able to kill him.”
My heart sank to my feet. “K-Katelyn, I don’t know if I–”
“Save it.” Her tone had gone cold. “I don’t fucking care, Lily. He took my best friend away from me and you’re here in the main palace of his castle being treated like royalty, and acting like what he did to Anny wasn’t a problem!.”
Katelyn took a deep breath and handed me a knife. “You’re either with us or against us.”
Her words made my blood run cold.
Before I could say anything, the sounds of barking startled us and we both knew what it meant.
Katelyn rushed for the back door and took one final look at me before closing the door.
———
“Today’s the day.” The Fire Wolf’s voice echoed in my mind. A hint of excitement raised his tone.
I sat up on the bed and looked out of the window to see a darkened moon in the sky. Its spherical shape was only illuminated because of the stars behind it.
I reached under the mattress and pulled out the knife that Katelyn gave me a week ago.
“Tell me the truth, Lily.” The Lycan King’s voice startled me, causing me to drop the knife. “Do you want my blood?”
I shook my head. “N-no, Your Majesty.”
He let out a cold laugh that sent shivers down my spine. Then suddenly, the doors slammed wide open as several maids barged right in.
“Lily…” I recognized Clarissa immediately.
Katelyn bared her teeth at the Lycan King. Then her eyes turned to me. “Make your decision!”
I was too busy looking at the maids to even notice that the Lycan King had moved to my side of the bed. He reached down on the floor and picked up the knife. Then he tossed it in my lap.
The Lycan King gave me a smirk. “Make your decision, Lily.” He then tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear.
“Why the fuck is she so special?! Why can’t you kill her like you did Anny?!” Katelyn pointed her finger at me.
In the blink of an eye, Katelyn lunged for me as the hatred in her eyes burned. When the Lycan King caught her, she smirked.
That was when Katelyn pulled out a knife of her own and plunged it into the Lycan King’s back.
“Yes!” I heard the familiar voice of the Fire Wolf cheer.
The Lycan King howled and threw Katelyn across the room. He hunched over on the floor as he struggled to take the knife out of his back.
“Here’s your chance, Lily~” The Fire Wolf beckoned me in a singsong voice.
“Now, Lily!” Katelyn barked. “Finish the fucking job!”
I looked up at the Lycan King who gave me a faint smirk. He didn’t even bother to get up from the floor.
“What are you waiting for? Kill him!” The Fire Wolf roared in my mind.
