Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The search team had finally picked up my trail. Alexander's rigid posture eased slightly as he listened to the report.
"Sir, we've found no financial transactions or digital footprints linked to Miss Evelyn in the last seventy-two hours."
Alexander's entire body went still. A cold dread slithered up his spine, making his fingers twitch. His voice came out sharper than intended:
"Unacceptable. How does someone survive three days without spending a single cent?"
"Did you even bother checking properly? Or are you just giving me half-assed results after barely looking?"
"Turn over every stone. I want answers. Now."
His furious roar echoed through the penthouse, shaking the crystal chandelier overhead.
The line remained silent for an excruciating moment before the hesitant reply came:
"Boss... Miss Evelyn hasn't had personal accounts for months. All her assets were liquidated long ago."
"Every property under her name—transferred to the corporation during our liquidity crisis last quarter."
Alexander's breath hitched. The phone slipped from his grasp, clattering against the marble tiles with finality.
When awareness returned, hot tears were carving paths down his usually composed face.
How could he have forgotten?
My entire fortune had been poured into saving his empire when creditors circled like vultures. I'd signed over everything without hesitation to keep him afloat.
Yet in his rage, he'd automatically assumed I'd stolen from him.
The realization struck like a physical blow, stealing his breath with its cruelty.
Sophia chose that moment to slither closer, picking up the fallen device with exaggerated concern. "Alexander, darling—"
His trembling fingers closed around the phone, but his gaze remained distant, seeing only the ghost of his mistakes.
