Chapter 36: Diverging Paths
Chapter 36: Diverging Paths
Mila's pov
"You're my only friend with benefits and I definitely don't see you as a whore," he said with conviction. At that moment I was aching to know what our relationship was to him. Was I a trick on the side or was there more? Just as I was about to ask, I chickened out.
My heart was racing too much for me to formulate words. Without waiting for me to speak he went on to preach.
"You're fine to go out with Robert. It will help culture you, since you haven't met enough men," he said but then grabbed my chin turning me to him. "Don't fuck him." His dark eyes were penetrating as he held my gaze.
I shook him off me, slapping his hand away. This was absurd.
"You just toyed with my body, and now you're trying to meddle with who I see. I can date whoever I want, and you can't tell me otherwise!"
Before he could answer, I rushed out the door. I was in such a hurry; I didn’t even zip my skirt. It didn’t matter to me. I just had to be out from his watchful eye.
Though I was running from him, what I really wished was for Mr. Williams to chase me down. I wanted him to possess me completely but instead, he was pushing me into the arms of another. Why did it have to be this way?
Distraught, after this encounter and the day I had, I wanted the drama-free comfort of my best friend. I walked to her apartment in the evening, the darkness making the lights of the city glow. With relief, I was finally at her outside door. I pressed the buzzer.
"Who is it?" she asked with a suspecting tone.
"Yo, it's me," I said, suddenly realizing how spent I was.
"My BFF. C'mon up!" she exclaimed in excitement. I heard the buzz and click of the lock releasing. I heaved the heavy door open and made my way inside. This place always had a familiar smell to me that felt like home. The mixture reminded me of old rugs and warm food.
As I walked to the elevator, I stopped short when I saw my appearance in the swirly buffed steel. Quickly, I scrambled to zip my skirt up before anyone saw me.
It took sucking in my breath, but I was able to force the zipper closed just in time for the doors to part. Several people left-probably from a party judging by the rowdy nature-and I was able to board fully dressed. Sighing, I pressed Ada's floor six and waited.
The lift crunched and grinded as it brought me up slowly. Each floor had an old ticking chime like a bell from a wind-up alarm clock. It never scared me; it only made me appreciate that sometimes the stuff our grandparents made was engineered to last longer.
After I left the elevator, my feet felt heavy as I trudged them along the worn, carpeted floor. I just wanted to have an easy night without expectation. Ada would make sure of that.
Opening the door, the room had a soft glow; several lowlights and the city skyline illuminated her place. She was holding a glass of wine, appearing slightly buzzed. When she let me in, I could see she had just received some samples sent by the vendor from Ravishing, LTD.
In the past Ada and I used to do part-time reviews of sex toys. Though we didn't make much money it was very exciting, especially with all our followers on social media. Luckily, our personal information was hidden, since my family is traditional and didn't allow such a thing. Privacy was essential, especially in that kind of business.
"Hi Mila. Doesn't this seem familiar?" Ada asked, fanning her hands out in presentation of the toys. I giggled and nodded. As I examined the cornucopia, she thrust a glass of wine in my face. Smiling gratefully, I took it.
After a gulp, I swirled it, watching the burgundy liquid stain the clear glass.
"It has been a while but some things I can't forget. I think my favorite vibrator was from Ravishing."
She laughed then said, "Mine too. I miss this. It was fun and simpler when we only had this secret job to worry about." She raised her eyebrows with a naughty grin. I clinked glasses with her in agreement. After that, she rushed into the kitchen and brought out some sushi.
"Girl, you read my mind,” I said. After stuffing my face I remarked, “You don't have to sell me on how awesome this was. I'm running into hiccups in my new job left and right."
"Well, take a load off!" Ada insisted, sitting on the L couch. “Have some wine, eat some salmon and wasabi.” She patted the cushion beside her. As soon as my butt hit, I instantly felt like a weight was lifted from my chest. I sighed and closed my eyes, reveling in the rare calm moment.
"Mila, you've been so busy with your internship and school, you've had no time to do anything else," Ada said. Fluttering my eyes open I glanced at her. Her brow was furrowed as she asked, “Are you okay?”
"Yeah," I said with a sigh, "I just wish things were less complicated." I shook my head, taking another swig. When our eyes met, she had a grin of excitement.
"I have a great idea! Let's work at Ravishing, LTD together. They sent me an invitation. Wanna see?"
