Chapter 19 You Asked the Wrong Person
Chapter 19 You Asked the Wrong Person
Maybe because Lily felt nervous, or because Jovanny's eyes were sharp, she felt like she had been seen through.
However, Jovanny merely gave her a brief look and proceeded to the refrigerator to fetch some water.
Lily's heart was beating extremely fast. She took a breath and put on a smile as she walked toward Jovanny.
"George said your name was Jovanny."
Jovanny ignored her as he closed the refrigerator and turned to walk back. Lily chased after him again. "Actually, George and I have been seeing each other for about only six months."
Jovanny stopped and turned to look at her. "And then?"
Lily's smile deepened. "Don't get me wrong. I just want to say that I don't know him very well yet, and after listening to your chat with George, I'm quite curious about what happened when you were kids. I'd like to hear what you think about George."
Jovanny had to size this woman up again. She was very tactful, using the excuse of getting to know George to approach him. If not for the shrewdness in her eyes, anyone else might have believed her words.
"You can ask his parents. You've asked the wrong person."
Lily stepped forward again to block his path. This made Jovanny frown.
"His mom and dad will naturally speak up for him. I feel you're a decent person, so you may not lie to me."
"If you think there are problems with his character, you can break up with him. You are asking around about his character behind his back. It seems like you don't really want to be with him."
Lily was stunned. She was about to say something when Gracelyn came out.
Gracelyn saw them standing together and talking about something. She quickly walked over and asked curiously, "What are you guys talking about?"
Jovanny didn't answer her. He went straight back into the bedroom and closed the door.
Lily smiled awkwardly, "I just wanted to ask about the things between him and George when they were kids."
"What could have happened between them back then?" Gracelyn's mind went back to the past. George and Jovanny seemed to have rarely played together in their childhood.
Jovanny was one of those quiet, straight-A students who always kept to themselves, while George was a mischievous, wild child, so the two just didn't play together.
"Well, he was about to say it when you came out." Lily's remark subtly sowed discord between Gracelyn and Jovanny.
Her husband engaged in conversation with her cousin's wife about his childhood. In such a scenario, an ordinary woman might choose not to comment on it but could feel bothered by the situation.
But Gracelyn and Jovanny had only been married for a few days, and they didn't have deep feelings for each other, so hearing Lily say that Gracelyn became more curious instead.
"Really? Was it something about George bullying him when they were kids?"
Based on the few words from George earlier, Gracelyn could conclude that George must have bullied Jovanny more than once back then, so was Jovanny tattling on George?
Gracelyn thought, "This man is so vindictive."
"I don't know." Lily thought of something and took Gracelyn's arm intimately. "Gracelyn, you know I haven't dated George for long. I don't know much about him. Why don't you tell me what he was like as a child?"
Gracelyn took Lily to the sofa. After they sat down, Gracelyn smiled and said, "George used to be very naughty, but he's quite nice. He has been righteous since he was a child, and he's always good to those around him. He's straightforward and blunt, and you must have seen this after spending so much time with him. I can see that he's very fond of you."
Lily smiled as she listened. After a while, she said, "Yeah, I got together with him just because he's frank and quite cute."
Hearing this, Gracelyn liked Lily more than before.
George had nothing, while Lily looked beautiful, and she was a college graduate. Gracelyn felt happy for George that Lily truly liked him.
George was kind to Gracelyn when they were kids. George was a few years older than her and had good relationships with the hooligans at school, so Gracelyn didn't get bullied at school.
Everyone knew she had a cousin they couldn't afford to offend and that he often came to pick her up at the school gate.
"Lily, are you from Corley too?"
"Yeah, both my parents are in Corley. My mom is a professor at an art college, and my dad is the operations director at a multinational company."
Gracelyn was a little stunned. "They are so awesome..."
She was suddenly a little worried about George.
"Well, it has nothing to do with me no matter how powerful they're. I've already told them about George. We'll meet later."
The two chatted a lot more. Gracelyn felt that Lily was not only pretty but also very polite. Even though the difference in educational background between Lily and George was big, she didn't show any dislike for George.
Gracelyn was afraid that George would not be accepted by Lily's parents.
Soon Laurie came back with George, and he was happy to see Gracelyn and Lily getting along so well.
"Gracelyn, I'll show you my cooking skills tonight. What do you want to eat?"
"Anything will do. You even know how to cook now, George?"
"Of course, just wait." George proudly carried the ingredients to the kitchen.
It must be said that George had indeed changed a lot. Even his cooking skills had become so good.
In less than an hour, George had the meal ready and brought it out. Mainly because it was Lily's first time coming to their house, the dinner was very sumptuous.
Philip was still next door, so Gracelyn wasn't sure if she should ask Philip over. After all, this meal was to welcome Lily.
George said, "Gracelyn, where's Philip? We're family now. Why didn't you call him over to eat with us?"
Brandon chimed in, "Yeah, he still lives alone, right? Go call him over quickly."
Gracelyn glanced at Jovanny, who had just come out of the room. He went straight to Gracelyn's side, "I'll go call him."
"Go ahead then."
When Jovanny came next door and knocked on the door, Philip, who thought Jovanny was trying to go back again, sulked and wanted to close the door.
Jovanny pushed the door open and said resignedly, "I'm here to tell you to go to dinner."
"Dinner?" Philip thought of something. "Grace's uncle and his family are back, right? I heard their voices earlier when I was in the house."
"Yes."
"Let's go and see."
Philip was lively. As soon as he heard that Brandon was back, he immediately smiled with joy and walked out with his walking stick.
When Philip arrived, the house became even more cheerful.
Gracelyn helped him to the table. George quickly greeted him. "Philip, do you remember me?"
Philip sized him up for a moment and then laughed, "George, right?"
"Yes. I didn't expect you to have such a good memory. Let me introduce my girlfriend to you. Her name is Lily Tyler. You can just call her Lily."
"Hello, Philip," Lily smiled.
Philip nodded happily. "Good, you are getting married. I remember that you were naughty as a kid."
George scratched his head in embarrassment. He didn't want to bring up his embarrassing childhood, so he changed the topic. "By the way, Lily's mom was a professor at a college. Philip, I remember you know a lot of professors, right? Maybe you know Lily's mom."
"Really? Lily, what's your mom's name?" Philip asked.
