Chapter 22 Gracelyn Has a Husband?
Chapter 22 Gracelyn Has a Husband?
Randy stood up and sat next to Gracelyn. He placed the mortgage papers on the desk and pointed out the problem.
Jovanny frowned deeply as he watched the two. He turned the wheel and drove into the café's parking lot.
"Look at this article. 5% interchange fee. In other words, they'll take 800 dollars from the 8,000 dollars you borrow as a 10% interchange fee. Did you understand this article when you signed this contract?"
"Yes. The manager said it was a 10% interest rate."
"No. The contract doesn't say that. And look at this one. They'll charge you 10% of the principal as a prepayment charge.
"This one too. It's about a penalty interest. You don't know what that is, do you? It means if you're overdue, besides the principal and interest, they'll charge you extra at a penalty interest. Normally, it'll be high. They won't put it in writing. But they'll charge you at the highest interest rate. This is the biggest problem in this contract."
Gracelyn's eyes grew as wide as saucers as Randy explained. She said timidly, "But I'll be fine if I pay the loan in time, right?"
Randy sighed, "Yes. But what if you cannot?"
Gracelyn fell silent. She believed that she could afford the debt. Luckily, she only borrowed 8,000 dollars. She may have trouble if she borrowed 16 thousand dollars.
"Is there anything else?"
Amused, Randy glanced at her. "Yes."
Gracelyn's heart sank again. Her face fell. "There's more?"
Randy tapped at the contract. "Insurance fee. It said right here. To ensure the loan can be paid when the borrower has an accident or loses the ability to pay. The contract is vague about it. I wonder how much it's going to cost. You should know better."
"How much do you think I can get in the end?"
Randy sighed, "It depends on the company. You should celebrate if you can have about 6,000 dollars after they charge you so many fees. It's possible that you can only get 3,000 dollars."
Gracelyn smiled bitterly. She didn't know there were so many traps in the contract as this was her first time getting a loan.
She blamed it on the manager. He made the deal sound too good and Gracelyn was in a hurry to buy the house.
"You should go to the bank in the future. Mortgage companies like this have fooled many people. Even if you go to court, seldom people can win as there's the contract."
Gracelyn was upset and lowered her head. Randy was amused by her sad look.
"I almost forgot. About Patrick, do you want to go to court or do you want to settle? I assume he has tried to talk to you."
Gracelyn nodded weakly. "Yes. He gave me a card. I gave it back and asked him to put the money in my account directly."
"Good. So, you're not going to sue?"
"Not necessary if he pays me back. I don't want to make a fuss. It's bad for both of us."
Gracelyn's reputation was ruined after the lies Marilyn spread in the company. If she went to court, other people would think Gracelyn was petty and cold-hearted.
"That's alright. You owe me dinner. If Patrick pays you back, don't forget to ask me out for dinner."
Gracelyn understood that Randy was teasing. But she wasn't in the mood. She nodded idly. "I'll keep it in mind."
As Gracelyn tried to say more, she looked up and saw Jovanny standing at the door. Gracelyn was surprised.
However, Jovanny didn't seem to notice her. He walked in Gracelyn's direction as the waiter greeted him.
Jovanny turned and met eyes with Gracelyn. Gracelyn froze in place.
Randy noticed Gracelyn's strange behavior and followed her gaze. He then saw Jovanny standing there in his fine suit.
Jovanny was handsome, but his sharp features gave him a dangerous vibe. His dark eyes would let people think they were being watched by a predator.
"Do you know him?" Randy asked.
Gracelyn answered the question with her actions. She stood up and greeted Jovanny.
"Jovanny."
Jovanny stopped and glanced at her arrogantly. "What are you doing here?"
He glanced at Randy with a blank face. For some reason, Gracelyn felt guilty.
Gracelyn laughed nervously. "This is Randy Hinton. He was my senior in school and is a lawyer now."
Randy was confused. Before he could recover, Gracelyn carried on saying, "This...this is Jovanny Latimer. He's my..."
Gracelyn suddenly had trouble saying the word. Jovanny waited with an arched eyebrow.
Randy observed their interaction and said, "Is he your boyfriend?"
"No... No. He's my husband," Gracelyn said through gritted teeth.
Randy grew more confused. Gracelyn came to him for a case of her boyfriend. Yet, she had a husband too?
What's more, Jovanny didn't object. Gracelyn wasn't lying.
A glint of sadness flashed across Randy's eyes.
"I see." Randy forced a smile.
"Randy, it's a long story. I'll tell you everything when I have the chance." Gracelyn worried that Randy would mistake her for a cheater and think she sued Patrick to marry Jovanny.
Gracelyn was afraid that Randy would think she was a corrupted woman and refuse to help her in the future.
Randy stood up too. "Alright. I'm leaving since we're done here. I don't want to intrude."
He left the café sadly.
The two looked at each other awkwardly after Randy left. Gracelyn broke the ice. "Well. Are you here for business?"
Jovanny nodded and sat down across from Gracelyn. "Something came up. Are you here for business too?"
"Yes," Gracelyn remembered the contract on the desk and rapidly hid it behind her.
"What's that?" Jovanny asked.
"It's...nothing."
Jovanny paused and asked the waiter to replace the two cups of coffee with new ones.
He leaned back into the chair and looked at Gracelyn indifferently. His tone was full of accusations. "Gracelyn, although we became a married couple due to force majeure factors, I don't want you to lie to me. We're a couple after all. Did you have debts?"
Gracelyn froze for a moment. She lowered her head as if she was a student being scolded by her teacher. "Well... I'm sorry."
Jovanny just stared at her silently.
Gracelyn handed him the contract meekly. "I got a loan. Don't worry. I'll pay the debt. You don't need to help me."
Jovanny glanced at the contract and took it from Gracelyn. He leaped through it and threw it back on the desk.
Gracelyn chanced a glance at Jovanny and was surprised that Jovanny didn't look angry.
She was shocked. Patrick would've made a fuss.
He would call Gracelyn stupid for falling for this trap and say Gracelyn couldn't get anything right. He would give her a speech about how women should devote themselves to their families and there was no point in getting their own houses.
Jovanny asked, "Why did you need to get a loan?"
