Chapter 23 They Aren't a Good Match
Chapter 23 They Aren't a Good Match
Relieved that Jovanny wasn't angry, Gracelyn sat down on the couch and said, "Didn't I tell you that I wanted Uncle's place? I was 16 thousand dollars short, so I tried to get a loan, but that's all I could get."
"You want the place so much?"
She nodded. "It's my grandmother's property. And I want a home of my own. Although I can't afford to buy a place in the city, the old house works, too."
If she hadn't woken up in time this time and gotten married to Patrick, what if she quarreled with him or divorced him in the future? With Brandon's place sold, she wouldn't even have a place to stay.
The same applied to Jovanny. She knew that Jovanny had no feelings for her. Once she got a divorce, at least she still had a place to live.
Jovanny looked deeply at her and did not speak for a moment.
Gracelyn picked up the contract and said to him, "Although you don't have to pay back the money, the money I pay back is also considered joint property. If you are not happy..."
She could not think of a good solution for a while, so she said, "If you have any terms, tell me. I will try my best to make you satisfied."
"Anything?"
She nodded. "Yes."
She stared at Jovanny nervously, hoping that he would not make any excessive demands.
Jovanny was silent for a moment and then said, "I don't want eggs in the morning."
"What?" Gracelyn was stunned. Was this his term?
Jovanny repeated, "I don't like eggs. I don't want them in my breakfast. Also, no celery or cilantro."
Gracelyn said nothing.
Then she said, "That's ... it?"
He folded his arms over his chest and thought for a moment before saying, "I'll tell you when I come up with something else."
She gawked at him for a long time, not being able to utter a word.
After a while, Jovanny asked, "What's the problem?"
She hurriedly shook her head. "Nothing. Well, now that you've got something to do, I'll get out of your hair."
She stood up, took all her things, and prepared to leave. To her surprise, Jovanny also stood up. "Let's go together."
"What? I thought you were here, as you had something to do." She was confused.
Jovanny looked down at his watch and said seriously, "He's late. I won't wait for him."
She said nothing.
She didn't know what to say. So, she simply followed Jovanny out of the café and got into his Mercedes.
They had been married for days, and it was the first time Gracelyn had ridden in his car. It looked new, and there was a faint fragrance inside.
When they returned home, George and the others were neatly dressed and ready to go out.
Seeing Jovanny and Gracelyn, Laurie smiled, "Hey, you're back. It just so happens that we're about to meet Lily's parents. Shall we go together?"
Gracelyn was slightly stunned. "That's not exactly appropriate, is it?"
"Why? Jovanny has a car, right? We'll ride in his car and save the cab money."
So, that was what Laurie was up to. Gracelyn glanced at Jovanny, feeling in a dilemma. She knew he wasn't a fan of that kind of occasion.
"Laurie, his car isn't spacious enough to take so many people."
Laurie smiled, "You're right. Then why doesn't he lend us his car? George can drive. He can take us there."
In other words, Laurie just wanted to borrow Jovanny's car. Lily bragged about how wealthy her parents were, and if Laurie and the others went to see them by cab, it would be humiliating.
"Well..." Gracelyn didn't get to call the shots, so she chose to remain silent.
George walked toward Jovanny. "Lend me the car, OK? I'll fill the tank up for you."
Jovanny glanced at George and then tossed George the car keys.
"Damn! Mercedes?" George was shocked. He was expecting a car of about 30 thousand dollars.
"I got a loan for it." Then Jovanny came inside.
Seeing how casual Jovanny was, Gracelyn reminded George to drive carefully in case he got the car scratched. In such a way, things might get tricky.
Though she was close to Brandon and his family, Jovanny wasn't. Their marriage was nothing but a deal.
"Relax. See you later. Thanks, Jovanny."
Laurie took the car, and the family went out happily. Now they wouldn't be embarrassed.
Gracelyn came inside and said to Jovanny, "Thanks."
"What for?"
She smiled, "Lending George the car."
Otherwise, she would have been in a quandary. If Jovanny didn't borrow the car, Laurie would complain about her being too stingy even though she had been staying with them for so long.
Jovanny did not say anything. He took out his laptop and continued to work.
Gracelyn went out to buy groceries to cook. She kept in mind that Jovanny didn't like coriander or celery, so she shut them out and ignored them when shopping.
She, Jovanny, and Philip had dinner together that night.
Philip loved gossiping. They chatted, and he suddenly said at the mention of Lily, "I don't think she and George are a good match."
Gracelyn paused while eating. "Why do you say that, Grandpa?"
Philip glanced at Gracelyn mysteriously. "I have socialized with countless people. I can tell at a glance what people are like."
Hearing that, Jovanny suddenly looked up and glanced at Gracelyn. He thought, "Grandpa is good at judging others' characters?"
Gracelyn didn't notice Jovanny's gaze. She asked, "What do you think of Lily then, Grandpa?"
Philip curled his lips and said nothing. Obviously, he disliked Lily.
Gracelyn didn't get it. In her eyes, Lily's education and family made her a good match for George. Why would Philip say otherwise?
She thought, "Is Grandpa suggesting that Lily is out of George's league?
"Perhaps. In fact, I agree to some extent. It's just that no one can tell exactly when it comes to relationships. External conditions cannot completely determine the feelings of two people. The most important thing is that they get along and like each other genuinely.
"The only thing I want for now is for Lily and George to get married as soon as possible. Then they will move into the city, and the night won't be noisy anymore.
"The current situation affects my sleep and work badly."
Yet when she thought about the money gap, she began to worry again.
At about ten p.m., Gracelyn received a transfer notification, which was 35 thousand dollars from Patrick which was remarked as paying her the money back.
She sent Randy a screenshot of the text, and after he said there was nothing wrong with it, she was completely relieved.
Seeing that she had been texting while holding her phone, suddenly, Jovanny found it hard to continue to focus on work.
He suddenly asked, "Why aren't your cousin and his family back yet?"
Gracelyn glanced at the o'clock, and it was almost eleven p.m. "They may be discussing details of the marriage and will come back later. You need the car tomorrow, right? I'll call them if they aren't back later."
Jovanny pursed his lips and said no more.
It was already 11:30 p.m. Seeing that George and the others were still nowhere to be seen, Gracelyn was about to call him. To her surprise, he called her first.
Gracelyn picked up the phone hurriedly.
George said hastily, "Damn, Gracelyn! We had a car crash!"
