Chapter Thirty-Eight
Chapter Thirty-Eight
– Facing the Enemy
Zack’s POV
I looked out the window to see the home surrounded by werewolves. Even the yard was filled with them. In the middle of the crowd stood a furious Alpha Leo.
“You’ve ruined everything!” Alpha Leo’s voice thundered. “All my work, all my progress! Come down here and face the consequences of your actions before I make you!”
The back of my head started to painfully itch as if my Fire Wolf was actively trying to claw his way out. He could deal with the alpha himself. My body temperature began to rise even more like I was being set on fire.
I turned to Lily, knowing that I wasn’t going to have enough time until my Fire Wolf decided to take over again.
“Pack your stuff, now!” My voice came out harsher than I wanted it to.
I heard the running coming up the stairs and put myself between Lily and the opening of where the door once was. In an instant, the werewolf had lunged through the door with its claws extended.
It scratched my arm which sent even more pumps of adrenaline through my body. I caught the werewolf and threw him through the window–we were on the second story.
Howls rippled through the night sky.
“Protect her with your meaningless life, Max!” I barked at him before I jumped out the window. I knew that they were after me and not her, and I was determined to protect her with my entire life.
There was a sea of werewolves before me, all bearing their teeth but not taking the initiative like their friend. When the one I threw out the window finally came to his senses, I grabbed him by the back of his neck.
“I’m here aren’t I?” I began to taunt them. “Is this the almighty Night Walker Pack? At least a hundred of you here with just one of me?” I smirked.
I then snapped the neck of the werewolf I held in my hands. I looked right at Alpha Leo. “Don’t send bitches to do the work of men next time.”
Fire blazed through his eyes. “Kill this murderous piece of shit!” Alpha Leo shouted.
Hell broke loose as the werewolves pounced on me. They sank anything and everything into my body.
Knives.
Claws.
Teeth.
Blood was starting to come out faster than I could heal. Despite that, I was still able to throw them off me. Even catching the ones that were trying to run towards the house–presumably to get to Lily.
I was going to kill them but I couldn’t bring myself to do it–even in self-defense. The thought of Lily clouded my mind at the worst time possible.
While I was distracted, one of the werewolves managed to stab me in the chest. If it was silver, it would’ve killed me.
I knew that they didn’t truly want to get rid of me, though. They wanted to incapacitate me so they could keep the only pure-blood lycan in the world as their slave; forced to pump out blood to keep their greedy pack in power.
When the knife made contact with my chest, the fire in my body dipped but only for a few seconds. Like a match to oil, my body was soon consumed with fire and it sent me into shock.
“When did you become so weak?” The Fire Wolf growled.
My body was too weak to fight against his powerful aura. Then I shifted into my Fire Wolf form, losing control for the second time in less than 24 hours.
“If you won’t protect Lily then I will!” The Fire Wolf roared.
It was like I got pulled into the backseat while all I could do was look on helplessly. I was still in my body, feeling every blow I got dealt with and dealt myself.
But it was like all of my morals and worries was thrown out the window.
The Fire Wolf’s aura took over and I wasted no time killing off the werewolves that surrounded us. I was trying to prevent a bloodbath for Lily’s sake, yet he was actively causing one. And relishing in it, too.
“Zack!”
I jerked my head up at the window and saw that someone had managed to rush past me and grab Lily. I leaped into the air, grabbing the house as I steadied myself on the window sill.
I didn’t even give the attacker enough time to react before I slashed his throat. Blood splattered on Lily’s face as his body fell to the ground and writhed in pain.
When Lily looked into my eyes, I saw horror and sadness in hers.
“It was either you or them… I’m sorry Lily, but I’ll choose you every time.”
Looking down at the werewolves who were trying to scale the sides of the house, I jumped down and extended my arms to connect with their neck. It brought them back to the ground.
I continued to fight the oncoming waves as if I wasn’t going to make it out alive. If anything, I was willing to accept that I wasn’t going to. Because despite the adrenaline that flowed through my body, courtesy of my Fire Wolf, I knew that it was only a matter of time.
When I looked back up at the window, I saw Lily’s face plastered with fear and concern. I knew I couldn’t ignore her.
Snapping the next of the werewolf who lunged for me, I leaped up the window again and wrapped my arm around Lily’s waist.
“Do you have everything?”
Lily grabbed the small backpack she had with her and nodded her head.
Holding her tightly against my body, I bolted out of the house. I looked behind me to see the waves of werewolves chase after us but I kept going.
My legs threatened to give out the more I ran but I just needed to reach the outside of the city. Once I could get Lily to Cerberus, she’d be free.
However, once we reached the main gate, we found that the exits were completely blocked off. Guards lined the streets as they pointed their assault rifles at me.
I completely halted in my tracks, holding Lily tightly against my chest.
Alpha Leo and his pack caught up with us in a matter of seconds and surrounded us from behind while the guards were stationed in front of us.
I never took my eyes off of the main gate but I heard Alpha Leo’s scoff from behind me.
“I’ll grant you a final act of mercy before you turn yourself in, murderer. Put Lily down and have her come to me. You should already know that we don’t want to kill either of you.”
I could sense his shit-eating grin off of his words.
“Come now, be reasonable. You’re surrounded and vastly outnumbered. If you want to play hero, at least be smart enough to hand over the girl.”
I continued to hold Lily as I ignored Alpha Leo’s taunts. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, focusing on trying to sense Cerberus’s aura through the gate.
There was no mistaking the heat and scent that my loyal dog from Hell was giving off. I smirked once I knew he was still close to the gate.
Turning to face Alpha Leo, I smiled at him.
“Here, boy!” I shouted into the night sky.
Silence befell the crowd of werewolves and guards for a moment.
Alpha Leo scoffed. “What the fuck are you–”
Cerberus then smashed the gate to pieces and he let out an ear-piercing howl. Looking down at the puny guards before him, he wasted no time and began to swallow the guards whole in groups of three.
